Film Viewing of PBS documentary "When Worlds Collide" and luncheon

Please join HFSD for a viewing of the PBS documentary film When Worlds Collide, followed by a luncheon at Ali Baba Restaurant, one of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in San Diego.

This film viewing is intended as a follow-up event to the February HFSD book club meeting on 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created. Aspects and consequences of the Columbian Exchange are covered in the movie.

When Worlds Collide is a highly imaginative exploration of one of the most intriguing epochs in human history: the earth-shaking period when the "Old World" first encountered the "New World." The film travels from the city of Granada in Spain, which was conquered by Isabella and Ferdinand, to the spiritual retreat of Machu Picchu, built by the Incas in Peru; from the Cerro del Tepeyac of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico to The Escorial, the amazing palace built by Philip II outside Madrid. When Worlds Collide explores how the collision of these two sophisticated but different worlds led to the birth of an entirely new Latino culture.

Optional Luncheon

Please join us for an optional luncheon at Ali Baba Restaurant, located at 421 E Main St., (between Taft Ave & Avocado Ave) El Cajon, CA 92020.

I appreciate your positive feedback, Lorraine. I'm glad you and Ray were able to attend. It was nice to talk to you both at the luncheon. You two sure picked a good time to leave Spokane and visit San Diego! :-) This event was more popular than I thought it would be. Perhaps we'll schedule more film viewings in the future. I just watched a documentary entitled "Selling God" that was sarcastic, hilarious, educational and highly critical of religion, especially Evangelical Xtians. This film might be a good candidate for our next film viewing.

I really wish I had been able to go. I did RSVP but had a very busy week, lost sleep and then had an arthritis flare up so didn't make it. I do hope more meet ups will take place in El Cajon.

This was a superb film and an excellent follow-up to "1493." I encourage those who enjoyed the film to read this book. I love learning about history, especially the history that we were not taught in school. The lunch was quite enjoyable, too. The food was excellent and it was nice talking and socializing with everyone.

Hi Diane. We'll probably start the movie at around 10:10 or 10:15. It is 87 minutes long. I estimate that we'll be at the restaurant around noon. I hope you can make it!
