Paddle Wappingers Creek: Pleasant Valley to Poughkeepsie

This is an 6-mile downriver paddle on a narrow, winding and scenic creek. It is a very pleasant paddle, but it is a creek so there are times where the water is shallow, rocky, ripples (one set of rapids) and there can be branches or fallen trees in the water. Note that this same section is used as the Pleasant Valley Water Derby on April 27th and that volunteers go through and clean out branches and brush before-hand, but don't take this for granted.

We will start at the Pleasant Valley Recreational Center at Cady Park on Route 44 in Pleasant Valley (behind Town Hall).

We will plan to take-out at the Overlook Road underpass for a six mile paddle on a weeknight. It is possible to continue ahead a mile to the Greenvale Recreational Park at Rt 376 in Poughkeepsie, or two miles to the Best Western Inn in Red Oak Mills (note this final section is not used in the derby and will likely have fallen trees that may be encountered in the dark).

The goal is Pleasant Valley to Overlook Road, but as we need to shuttle cars anyhow we can decide at the put-in if participants want to take a longer route. Either way pack a headlamp, so you don't get stuck in the dark.

Kayak Rentals Available.
