Great Range Traverse: hike 8 46er peaks in a day!

Join HVH for a great day of hiking!

This one will cover 23 miles, 9000'+ vertical gain and 8 46er peaks.

The Great Range Traverse is considered one of the most difficult day hikes in the northeast. Consider, there is 9000' of vertical gain in the first 16 miles of the hike (the remaining 7-8 is all downhill!). Backpacker rates it as #3 in hardest day hikes.. some beg to differ!

http://www.backpacker.com/may_2005_feature_hardest_dayhikes/destinations/8485?page=2

This one has it all.. extreme ups and downs, legendary rock scrambles and stunning views!

Great Range Panorama from Dix

Starting at Rooster Comb trailhead, follow the Great Range trail (yellow disks) over the Wolfjaws, Armstrong, down the cables of Gothics, up and down the cliffs of Saddleback and Basin, in and out a spur trail to Haystack and finish on Marcy, before the long slog down the Van Hoevenberg trail to the Loj.

we will hit the cables upon descent of Gothics!

OK..Here is the statistics form my "Endomondo"Sports Tracking System: 25.72 miles in 19hrs 15 min and 41 sec (Includes all the breaks and filming time) Total ascent 9971 ft, total descent 9418ft. Max altitude 5354 ft, average speed 1.3mph. Should be 23 miles, but everyone did the extral 1 mile of Mt. Rooster Comb, and some people did extra 0.2 miles for the Valley View Ledge over look. Other extra miles came out unfortunately from "got lost on the way back to Garden parking lot". In the dark, the trail went to a end on a campsite, and there was a creek crossing. We crossed the creek, and the red marked trail start to going up a hill, from that point we thought it might not be the right trial, and started looking the "Right trail". WE crossed the creek back and forth afew times, up and down the hills. Finally went to a shutter asked the hikers who were sleeping there, and not a bad luck. we were able to walk out safe and sound. A extra A+ adventrue. Love it!!!

It was a great day to hike and a very challenging hike. Though the stats looks similar to Devli's path, this is a difficult hike than Devil's path as I had to use my hands for almost all the climb ups and climb downs. Great views overall. Loved the early morning view from Rooster comb and the view from Basin.

Thanks to Keith, Katarina, Kathy and Yuki for their excellent company. Especially for Katarina and Kathy for their timely help. BTW, Saddleback is one of those rare sections where it looks difficult in photos than in reality!

Excellent hike. Great group of people. Congrats to everyone on taking this challenge.

I could not have done Saddleback cliff decent without moral & technical support from fellow HVH hikers. It became one of the memorable hike. Thank you so much!!

There is no words in the world could describe the joy of this hike: nice weather, GREAT trail, and pleasant hiking companies. Chris, thank you so much for leading the hike-this is the dream hike I always wanted to do, and I am so happy the dream came true. Thanks so very much to Paolo for the long ride, and it was such a pleasure to hike with you and Ponzy. Glad to meet so many old friends and meet so many new friends on the trail, and a personal congratulation to everyone who completed the entire course. Wish all my best to all of you safe and sound in the future hiking trip!!! See you all soon.

Thanks for the replies, never got to read this until as of this moment coz I lost my sprint signal ( I don't recommend this carrier to all hikers out there ) all through out my stay in the Adirondacks. Thanks!

Anyone meeting up Friday night at the Lake Placid Brewery - Do you have a time preference? I'd prefer earlier rather than later only because of the ungodly early am meeting time. They say on their website they don't do reservations....

    August 19, 2014

    • Donald B.

      I'm at the brewery.

This place is hopping! Are we anywhere inparticular?

      August 22, 2014

Lots of traffic on Rt. 87 just north of Albany. My eta at the brew pub will probably be more like 6:50. I will meet folks there as soon as I can get there - definitely don't worry about waiting to order, of course.

Forecast is looking great! Mostly sunny with mountain temps in the mid 50s and valley temps in the mid 70s. Whoo!!

I see that some people from are going. Does anyone want to carpool? I will be leaving from the Hartford area around 1:30pm and returning Sunday evening. I'm hoping to get in a smaller hike on Sunday before returning home.

I'm leaning towards 15 of the 17 peaks in Cats Cave Dog hike.....good workout for AR racing (24 hrs plus) and I will have a race in the Cats 2nd week of sept. this might be a scouting mission. Will update status later this week.

Hey Chris, I should be up there around 6:30pm on Friday. I will be staying at Tmax n Topo. I'm willing to help with car spot also. Just so long as I don't get stranded at the Hostel. Also I plan on going to the Lake Placid Brewery Friday night when I get up there. Hope to see some of you there!

    August 21, 2014

    • Keith

Keeping my fingers crossed, but so far it looks like I may be able to get up there in time to get to the Lake Placid Brewery by about 6:30 p.m. tomorrow evening. Hopefully I'll see some of you folks there.

      August 21, 2014

    • Katrina

      Alright! See you there!

      August 21, 2014

  • Keith

Saw your update email, Chris. I'm certainly willing to leave my car at the Garden on Friday night, but would need a ride back to Tmax & Topos that night, then a ride from Tmax & Topos to the Rooster Comb trail head on Saturday morning and I have no idea whether that's feasible due to where others are staying, etc. Let me know what you think.

    August 20, 2014

      August 21, 2014

    • Keith

Excellent - though see Chris D's new comment about meeting at the Garden Saturday morning at 4:40 a.m. That way we won't have to worry about complications with a Friday night car drop arising from us all getting in at varying times Friday evening.

      August 21, 2014

  • Chris D.

Okay. Since everyone seems to staying at tmax and topos, let's do the shuttle Saturday morning. Let's meet at 4:40 and drive the short shuttle to the start.

Absolutely psyched about this hike. Leaving Stamford Friday early afternoon if anyone needs a ride in that area.

    August 18, 2014

Hi folks, I've secured a camp site @ Wilmington notch campground, 10 miles away from lake placid and about 18 miles north of trailhead(rooster comb). There are still 8 sites available as of this moment. But 4 more are welcome to share with our site.

Not a fan of doing it North to South. Much prefer South to North. You get the big peaks out of the way and you ascend all the really steep sections. Descending Basin or Saddleback on wobbly legs is not a lot of fun.

    April 8, 2014

    • Yuki

After doing Basin and Saddleback traverse, I found why South to North is preferred. It was fun to climb series of those big rocks just below the west face summit of Saddleback. Some of those rocks have big cracks, easy to find a good hand & foot hold. But some are not. I had a problem finding a decent hold with my height (I'm 5"5) in one section just below the summit. I had to trust the traction of my shoes just like slide climbing. Not sure if I can climb down the same section...

      1 · July 15, 2014

    • Mike D.

Yuki going down Saddleback gets easier the more you do it. I've been done it 7 or 8 times now and it doesn't phase me anymore. But truthfully I think I'd enjoy South to North more myself.
