UPDATES (03/21/2010 1:15 p.m.) -- PLEASE READ:

Here we go ... let's try yet again!

The Google link in the calendar post provides directions from the Park & Ride lot, New Paltz, NY, to the Santanoni Road parking lot. IMPORTANT: This lot is on the left, just before the end of CR 25 (where the larger Upper Works parking lot is located). If you've passed the Mt. Adams / Allen Mountain parking area (on the right), or reach the end of CR 25, you've driven too far. Please note that if you plan to spend the night in Schroon Lake or Long Lake, you will need at least one hour's drive time to reach the trailhead. We'll head to "Times Square" from Upper Works and head for (a) Couchsachraga Peak first, returning back off the range from Times Square; then to (b) Panther Peak, then (c) south to Santanoni Peak. (d) We may not descend back to the DEC trail via the "New Old Trail" herd path because this long, steep route that might be unbroken and socked in with snow. A longer but easier option will be to return to Times Square and descend, which adds about 1.5 miles to this trip. Weather/ trail updates will be added here, beginning a week prior to the event. Past Bradley Pond, all the trails are herd paths that are very tight in spots -- be extra careful to look for spruce traps in deep snow. NOTE -- IT IS STILL WINTER IN THE ADIRONDACKS. Please, if you have a GPS, add a track from a previous hiker's trip to your device. If you need help finding one, let me know. This is a real challenge! In the summer this trip has taken me nearly 12 hours to complete, and the winter trip will take 1-2 hours longer. Be sure to view and print out the trip planner and topo maps from the calendar post. As of this update, all routes are broken out; please stay tuned for weather and other updates. If any of you have any other suggestions, email me and let me know.

ESSENTIALS TO BRING: Flash light AND head lamp, food / snacks / at least three bottles of water, first aid items. Wear multiple layers of synthetic materials for warmth; consider bringing charcoal warmers for fingers and toes. See suggestions for GEAR on the "About" page for additional gear ideas.

NOTE: Poles and friction devices for boots, such as micro-spikes and crampons are ESSENTIAL as added gear should wet rock surfaces freeze. Snow shoes may be required -- stay tuned for weather updates. CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT SNOW DEPTH INFORMATION FOR NEW YORK STATE. Be sure to have a method for backpack attachment for these items; be sure to try out your gear before you start out for your first winter trip! TEST YOUR LIGHTS!!!
