Adirondak 46er Winter Series: Phelps and Tabletop Mountains

We will meet at the High Peaks Information Center steps at 7:00am take the Mt Marcy via Van Hoevenberg Trail, to the, Tabletop Bushwhack Trail, come back down that to the, Mt Marcy via Van Hoevenberg Trail, return a short distance to the Phelps trail, and then return via the Van Hoevenberg trail to the parking lot.

Milage: 12.4 miles
Elevation gain: 4500 feet

East High Peaks Wilderness

DEC Trail Conditions: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9198.html

Excerpt from DEC Trail Conditions:
Snowshoes are required above Marcy Dam (2,350 ft) and wherever else snow depths exceed 8 inches. The use of snowshoes or skis prevents injuries, eases travel through snow, and avoids "post-holing". Post-holing makes trails more difficult and more hazardous for others to use. (1/28)

(Lack of) Trail Note: Tabletop does not have a maintained trail to the summit. Most of the hike will be on the highway of the HP Wilderness; the VanHoevenberg Trail between Heart Lake and Marcy. The the "herd path", up Tabletop, is not blazed or maintained.

Expect Winter Summit Conditions

Multiple traction devices and cloths/food/water to survive overnight exposure are required.

LOJ Parking: $10 (Non-member)

NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights. You should review topographic maps and trail features carefully; understanding topography of any hike is key to your knowing where you are, where you're going, and how to get back.

See suggestions for GEAR on the "About" page for additional gear ideas.

I noticed there are people RSVP for both this hike and the Marcy one. Please pick a hike to let people off the waitlists.

Hello all. We are moving the meetup time to 7am to ensure parking in the Loj lot given it is President's day weekend.

Make sure to bring $10 cash for the parking fee (non ADK members). Snowshoes will be necessary the whole way (I will carry microspikes too just in case). The Daks have continued to get snow over the past several days.

We will not have to break trail until the junctions with Tabletop and Phelps (there is an HVH group starting a different hike 30 minutes ahead of us), then it might be possible depending on what others are hiking.

Weather is looking good for Saturday. See you there!

Anyone driving up from NYC area (or at a time that I can take a train to meet)? My schedule is flexible.
