Catskill 3500 Series - Balsam Mountain

Balsam Mt, a Catskill 3500' High Peak, is one of the four peaks that must be hiked in Winter to become a 3500 Member.
Snowshoes Required. Bring microspikes, too. Expect it to be a wet and messy hike due to the warm temps on Friday.

** PLEASE READ THE FULL DESCRIPTION BELOW BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THIS HIKE **

* Not a Beginner hike *

NOTE: If you are coming from NYC and do not have transportation, you can catch the 7 AM bus from port Authority which arrives at the New Paltz Park and Ride at 8:30 am. I have room for 3 and can meet you there. First signed up first served.

Please be early - we leave on time

Special Gear / Requirements:
Hiking boots, Gaiters, Microspikes, Non-cotton wicking clothing, enough food/water for the hike (if you don't know how much food and water you'll need for a hike like this, you should not be on it), Trekking poles, First Aid, Insulating shirt & rain jacket (just in case), Extra pair of socks, Catskill Trails conference map # 142 (http://www.nynjtc.org/product/new-catskill-trails-map-set-maps-hiking-catskills) and/or National Geographic Illustrated Map of Catskill Park trails (map # 755) (http://www.adk.org/product.php?pid=390&pname=Catskill%20Park%20Map%20755); camera!

Coordinates for the parking area:[masked], [masked]

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Estimated distance: 5.6 miles round trip
Estimated elevation gain: 1,600 feet
Estimated time: 4 hours

While the elevation grade on this trail is mild at first, it gets VERY STEEP. The trail crosses a stream at two places and rock hopping or downed tree crossing is necessary. After 2 miles on the RED trail, we will come to the intersection with the BLUE trail. We will take a right onto the BLUE trail for approximately 0.8 mile up to Balsam Mountain summit. After enjoying the view and a snack, we'll retrace our steps and return to our cars.

**FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH MAPS OF THE RELEVANT TRAILS/AREA AS WELL AS ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS BEFORE DOING THIS HIKE.**

**** Everyone must come prepared to be responsible for themselves. ****
