Special Gear / Requirements:
Hiking footwear. Warm weather wicking clothing. Enough food/water for the hike. Trekking poles. First aid. NYNJTC Catskill Trails map # 145. Safety glasses are a very good idea for bushwhacking - save your eyes!!!
Take the New York State Thruway to exit 19: Kingston. Keep right for Route 28 west. After just over 36 miles (1 mile past the Belleayre Ski Area access road) turn right into Main Street towards Fleishmanns, then after 0.4 miles turn right on Lake Street. After 4 miles keep left to stay on County Road 3, then after 2.7 miles turn right to stay on County Road 3. The road ends after less than a mile at the parking area. At the snowplow turnaround on the left turn around and park just below the white house. There is not much room to park but the traffic is minimal. There is private property everywhere - do not block driveways and respect trespassing signs!
WARNING REGARDING BUSHWHACKS: "Bushwhacks" are hikes that go off of maintained trails and through pure wilderness. Please make sure you are confident in your ability to navigate through the woods without trails since it is very easy to get lost in these forests, especially in the summer. Map & Compass REQUIRED. GPS is also recommended, but it is not a substitute for a map & compass and the skills to use them effectively.
We start on the dirt road continuation of what used to be County 3. We take that trail .95 miles to the saddle between Vly and Bearpen to an intersection with a hunter's cabin to the left.
We take the herd path to the right to Vly and back. Then go up, past the cabin, to the summit of Bearpen & over to N. Bearpen. Return to the cabin and back down to cars.
The DEC limits group size in the Bearpen State Forest to 20.
