Mohonk Preserve: Mohonk is not a state park. The non-profit Preserve charges a $15 fee for day use. The ranger at the parking lot will have passes. 12-month passes are also available http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/join)
The Hike: This popular event is not a long hike and is more about experiencing the rock scrambles, ledges, cliffs, cave-like areas and many crevices of the "Lost City" area. One should be comfortable with these type activities before signing up.
**Please arrive earlier than the 9:30 start time. The lot fills quickly. We'll start at 9:30 from the Clove Road parking lot which is one mile north of Rt. 44/55. From the parking lot kiosk, we'll head west into the woods on the Blue SRT trail. We'll then make a right onto the Yellow Kings Lane trail and stay on that for a short ways to the start of the rock scrambles. For several hours, we'll climb through, under and over a number of unique crevices and rock features. We'll take breaks at the top of a couple cliffs that afford nice views. Once back at the parking lot, swimming is available across the street at Split Rock. The cool, clear waters of the stream and swimming hole offer a great place to cool down and relax.
Distance: About 5 miles (Most of our event will be spent exploring the crevices).
Duration: Approx 5 hours
Difficulty: Tough for some but lots of fun. Be prepared to use upper body strength climbing up ledges and through passageways. ***Please don't sign up if you can't handle heights, closed spaces or tight rock formations.
Gear: Headlamp; scrambling/garden gloves are helpful. Footwear with good soles for scrambling. Water and lunch/snacks.
