There is no "sweeper" following the last hiker(s). Know the route and bailout points. Pace will average about 2.5mph. We start together but the group typically gets spread out in the first two miles.
Hike: We'll start hiking at 9:00AM so please arrive earlier. Meet by front entrance of the Bear Mtn. Inn. From there, we'll head to the rear of the Inn and follow the paved path along the west side of Hessian Lake. At the red/white Major Welsh Trail, we'll head uphill for over one mile. There are several steep, rocky sections on this section. We'll meet the AT at the top and turn left towards Perkins Tower for great views. After a brief stop, we'll then go south on the AT, and cross both Perkins Drive and Seven Lakes Drive. Afrer crossing 7 Lakes Drive, stay right on the AT for several another hundred yards and then bear right onto the 1777W Trail. (this trail will cross a PIP parkway ramp. Then cross the parkway itself via overpass). After a couple miles, blue T-T trail goes up the south side of Popolopen Torne. This section has rock scrambles. At the top, we'll see the large stone cairn memorial to veterans at the top and more great views. We'll then go down blue on the other side and re-connect with the 1777W. We'll follow that trail for about one mile before going under Rt. 9W and through the Fort Montgomery State Historic site. We'll cross the Popolopen Creek via the hikers bridge and meet the AT again at the Bear Mountain Bridge. We'll follow the AT through the Bear Mtn. Trailside Zoo (lowest elevation point on the entire Appalachian Trail) and back to the cars.
