***Metro-North train arrives in Beacon about 8:30. It's a 2 mile drive to the trailhead. Rides can usually be arranged with other hikers. Sometimes, there's a loop bus but you'd have to check the schedule.
** Planning on going to 2-Way Brewing for food and beverages after the hike.
The Hike: The hike starts at 9am so please arrive earlier. The first mile is a steady, and somewhat strenuous, uphill that some new hikers find difficult. Hikers should not overestimate his/her abilities. The average pace will be pretty casual. There will be brief stops at the old casino site, the fire tower and reservoir.
Here's the route:
- Take the red Casino Trail one mile to site of former casino/hotel/cable car motor house..
- Continue on red one mile to white trail.
- Turn right onto white. Take white several hundred yards to fire tower.
- Return back to red trail.
- There's an old unmarked woods road that goes to reservoir.
- Go counterclockwise around reservoir to road below the dam.
- Take service road downhill 1/3 mile to white Fishkill Ridge Trail.
- Turn left into woods. Take white downhill to Yellow.
- Turn left onto yellow and continue back to red Casino Trail.
- Turn right onto red trail and head back to parking lot.
Distance: ~5.2 miles
Duration: approx 2.5 -3 hours including stops at viewpoints
Difficulty: first mile is all uphill and can be difficult for some;
Elevation gain: Approx 1,600 feet
Views: All directions
Gear: Microspikes or similar traction; Moisture-wicking clothing; water; snacks;
Map: NY/NJ Trail Conference map for East Hudson trails; Avenza phone app for Hudson Highlands Park trails; or similar maps or apps.
