- PARTNER EVENT: UX of Dim Sum
*** PLEASE CHECK EVENT DETAILS AND RSVP at https://ti.to/thesgvux/ux-of-dim-sum-june-2019 *** This is a pilot event. Seats are limited. LET'S GO YUM CHA! Literally meaning "drink tea" in Cantonese, going to yum cha is an important Hong Kong breakfast/brunch tradition and dining experience. For the uninitiated, dim sum can be intimidating. Through a workshop focused on design thinking activities, designers and non-designers alike can practice concept modeling, ethnographic research, and mapping. You get a chance to think about what it means to design for accessibility and usability through a yum cha experience. WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT UX OF DIM SUM San Gabriel Valley UX events are focused on active learning, sharing and connecting as a community. As the first UX of Dim Sum event, we're still figuring things out and fine-tuning the workshop experience. It's the first of its kind and we will rely heavily on you to learn about the challenges and questions you have about approaching and thinking about user experience, service design, and content strategy. WHAT YOU'LL GET WHEN YOU ATTEND UX OF DIM SUM We'll provide you with plenty of opportunities to learn, network, and have fun -- it's a two-part workshop. We'll start with the food. You'll receive a workbook to take notes and sketch your observations around understanding the environment, the players, the challenges, and the opportunities. In part 2, we'll relocate to a classroom nearby. It's a 7-minute walk from the restaurant. Armed with stickies and markers, we'll map the domain of dim sum and talk through how objects are connected, structured, and related to the customer/you! You'll come away having practiced service design methods, such as personas, service blueprints, stakeholder maps, journeys, jobs to be done. WHO SHOULD ATTEND UX OF DIM SUM If you're interested in UX, customer experience, product design, communication design, and food. Bring your parents, friends, and kids. Dim sum is a group event. Unfortunately, dim sum is NOT very vegan or gluten-free friendly. Those who are allergic to shellfish will have limited options. HOW MUCH? Your ticket covers: - cost of food + tea + gratuity - rental space for the workshop component - printing and workshop supplies - event registration fees
- Designing Your Career Workshop
This workshop was designed for UX Designers by leaders who hire UX Designers. Please note we have limited space for this event for 22 people. At the door registration will be $10.00. In our Meetup group’s monthly Peer-to-Peer reviews, we see common questions arise: - Is my portfolio good enough? - How do I position my strengths? - How do I make that special connection with the hiring leader and team? - How do I figure out why I didn’t get that job? - How do I handle stress and pressure of a job search? - What kind of mindset is constructive? In this workshop, you will answer these questions by using a Design Thinking approach. We’ll start with insights into the changing market for designers. MATCHING YOURSELF TO THE FIVE HIRING PERSONAS Then, we’ll review the 5 personas of hiring teams, from agencies and ventures to enterprises—and the different things that each team looks for in a design coworker. FINDING THE RIGHT JOB With these insights, you’ll choose your best-fit place to work, develop a readiness checklist, and outline the portfolio story you want to tell. WHO IS THIS FOR? For all job levels, from student intern to team director. PARKING We recommend the public parking structure for Santa Monica Library main branch at: 601 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401 The entrance to the structure is off 7th street. It's a flat rate $5/day and a lot cheaper than the parking lot across the street from Blankspaces. Also, you'll avoid the traffic jams on the street and parking lots on the 2nd/3rd street area. LIMITED SPACE Please note we have limited space for this event at 22 people maximum. At the door registration will be $10.00. WAITLIST Unfortunately, Meetup no longer supports Wait Lists for paid events. If you'd like to be on the Wait List, please join our LAUXMeetup.com/slack group and join the #waitlist channel. On that channel, let us know your name and which event you'd like to try to get a spot on. If a spot opens up, it'll be first come first serve.
- Figma Toolkit Workshop
You’ve read the Medium articles. You’ve heard the buzz. Come check out what Figma has to offer in our workshop via our instructor, senior Product Designer, David Randall aka DR. DR first encountered Figma..."while working in San Francisco my team was around the corner from the Figma offices and they quickly converted a few coworkers into fanboys. I was hesitant. I’d just picked up and optimized sketch, but after struggling with file management, syncing and sharing I finally took the plunge and Figma has quickly become the most indispensable tool in my arsenal." Our workshop will focus on concepts around interface design, but we’ll work our way through the full set of Figma tools. • Basic Primitives and short cuts • Typography, Styles and Style Stacking • Basic UI Creation & Spacing • Reusable Components • Vector manipulation (icon creation etc.) • Prototyping and Sharing WHY FIGMA? What jobs does Figma do that the competition doesn’t? Foremost is the cloud-first approach of course. There are no files, nothing to sync or set up, just seamless collaboration with multiple users across multiple platforms all in real time. But it’s the fit and finish of the app that really make this app something you’ll love coming back to. The UI is elegant, the performance is unbelievably snappy, and when they decide to tackle a feature they do the research and ground up reimagining to get it right. Smart selection* is a great example, something neither Sketch or Adobe figured out how to do well. *https://help.figma.com/article/189-smart-selection WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT? https://www.figma.com/downloads/, though of course you can just use the app in browser with no need to download anything. IS FIGMA FREE? Figma is free up to 3 projects and 2 members. After that it starts a $15-12/mo. https://www.figma.com/pricing/ WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ALREADY? Some basic understanding of graphics programs and tools like Sketch and Illustrator will certainly be helpful, but isn’t required. We encourage you to try Figma and give it a whirl before the workshop. ARE DRINKS AND SNACKS INCLUDED YES? We’ll have light snacks and a variety of drinks for our workshop students. WHERE SHOULD I PARK? We recommend the public parking structure for Santa Monica Library main branch at: 601 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401 The entrance to the structure is off 7th street. It's a flat rate $5/day and a lot cheaper than the parking lot across the street from Blankspaces. Also, you'll avoid the traffic jams on the street and parking lots on the 2nd/3rd street area on Saturdays. AT THE DOOR FEE We encourage everyone to register ahead of time on Meetup. If you'd like to swing by the day of the event, the fee is $65.00.
