You’ve read the Medium articles. You’ve heard the buzz. Come check out what Figma has to offer in our workshop via our instructor, senior Product Designer, David Randall aka DR.
DR first encountered Figma..."while working in San Francisco my team was around the corner from the Figma offices and they quickly converted a few coworkers into fanboys. I was hesitant. I’d just picked up and optimized sketch, but after struggling with file management, syncing and sharing I finally took the plunge and Figma has quickly become the most indispensable tool in my arsenal."
Our workshop will focus on concepts around interface design, but we’ll work our way through the full set of Figma tools.
• Basic Primitives and short cuts
• Typography, Styles and Style Stacking
• Basic UI Creation & Spacing
• Reusable Components
• Vector manipulation (icon creation etc.)
• Prototyping and Sharing
What jobs does Figma do that the competition doesn’t? Foremost is the cloud-first approach of course. There are no files, nothing to sync or set up, just seamless collaboration with multiple users across multiple platforms all in real time. But it’s the fit and finish of the app that really make this app something you’ll love coming back to. The UI is elegant, the performance is unbelievably snappy, and when they decide to tackle a feature they do the research and ground up reimagining to get it right. Smart selection* is a great example, something neither Sketch or Adobe figured out how to do well.
WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?
https://www.figma.com/downloads/, though of course you can just use the app in browser with no need to download anything.
IS FIGMA FREE?
Figma is free up to 3 projects and 2 members. After that it starts a $15-12/mo.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ALREADY?
Some basic understanding of graphics programs and tools like Sketch and Illustrator will certainly be helpful, but isn’t required. We encourage you to try Figma and give it a whirl before the workshop.
ARE DRINKS AND SNACKS INCLUDED YES?
We’ll have light snacks and a variety of drinks for our workshop students.
WHERE SHOULD I PARK?
We recommend the public parking structure for Santa Monica Library main branch at: 601 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401
The entrance to the structure is off 7th street.
It's a flat rate $5/day on the weekend and a lot cheaper than the parking lot across the street from Blankspaces. Also, you'll avoid the traffic jams on the street and parking lots on the 2nd/3rd street area on Saturdays.
AT THE DOOR FEE
We encourage everyone to register ahead of time on Meetup. If you'd like to swing by the day of the event, the fee is $65.00.
