The Main Event: Jeff Saamanen on the Importance of a Development Pipeline

This month's featured presenter is:

Jeff Saamanen creator of The Pirates of Haven

presenting: Importance of a Development Pipeline

"The importance of developing a strong pipeline for development for any team's games and IP including a game design document, version tracking, hour logs, and collaboration spaces.

I will discuss my methods and routine in the process of developing a game from concept to finished product, and all the steps in between."

We have the pub patio area reserved (which is covered and heated) and a ton of space. There are 3 TVs that we can hookup to and display slides or show off your current projects. Come relax, talk shop and enjoy the awesome local food and craft-brewed beer.

The meetup will kick off with presentations and then transition into free-form networking.

  • 5:00pm: Doors open
  • 5:30pm: Opening announcements by group organizers
  • 5:35pm: Featured presentation
  • 6:00pm: Open stage for show-and-tell, networking and socializing

I really liked Jeff's idea of keeping a revision history so that people who have just joined the project can see a simple history of how the game has changed over time.

I found Jeff very thorough, definitely the star attraction. I think it's good you let industry reps have the floor and especially that people seeking input like Marta can be given time and space to present and reach out for advice.

Thanks for hearing my summer camp idea, everyone! Let's hope we can make this a reality. I got some great feedback today. If you have any more ideas please email me at [masked] or tweet me @pixelsbymarta. See everyone soon!

Some advice: you won't know if you have reached your destination if you don't clarify it - first job is to set out learning goals for the camp, preferably related in a pyramid and parallel combination (other camps can help with this); then link learning goals with measurable outcomes (products they can work on and the criteria you might want to establish for those). This will help you provide good direction for the hands-on part, coaching, feedback etc. I'd break up such long days with work-alone or work-in-team applications of principles they have just learned. These can be taught in a sequence that allows them to combine and compound so that each days tasks are used in the next days and projects get more complex. The suggestion by the Nokia guy is standard for beginners and a good one - get them to program a virtual robot to do a task and then out of a virtual room ... using just statements in a flowchart-feedback format. Good luck.

I have a game in development for the iPad and iPhone and am looking for people experienced with independent marketing and with selling out to big publisher/distributors.

I'd be interested to chat! Unfortunately I was in Seattle at this meetup. Perhaps see you at another LevelUp or iOS hackers meetup?
