Budget Movie Meetup: Elysium

Join us for the next budget Meetup, the Meetup of choice for the budget conscious film fan. See a new Hollywood release at the before noon bargain showtime followed by post-movie discussion over lunch.

This month's movie is sci-fi actioner ELYSIUM. The setting is a futuristic dystopia where the privileged few live in a city in the clouds and everyone else does their best to stay alive on the industrial wasteland of the planet surface. Will our hero be able to reach the cloud city and its life-saving medical treatment in time? It stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster and was written and directed by Neil Blomkamp (DISTRICT 9).

The location this month is the AMC Castleton Sq 14. Showtime is 11:30 and Meetup time is 11:15. Running time is 1 hr, 50 min and we can expect 20 minutes of trailers. The group convenes in the main lobby (past the ticket taker in the vicinity of the concession stand) before the movie; we generally take our seats about 10 minutes before showtime. If you miss us before the movie, we also gather in the hall/lobby outside the auditorium before heading on to the restaurant.

This event repeats every second Saturday. The location rotates among the three AMC multiplexes (Southern Plaza, Castleton Sq, Traders Point).

Movie suffered from too much prolonged violence, volume and unnecessary special effects--could have been a much better movie if they had taken more care (and used some of the special effects budget blown during all the over the top "shoot 'm ups") to develop a more nuanced story. I did enjoy the contrasting worlds they created with the very gritty L.A. pitted against the idyllic Elysium. As always i enjoyed hearing the various perspectives during our discussion.

Like a lot of big budget Hollywood movies it left me wishing they'd taken as much care with the script as with the effects and art direction. As always enjoyed the roundtable discussion.

I am writing Dan's thoughts on this movie. We both enjoyed the movie. There was alot of action and the special effects were outstanding. The flying machines looked real to life.
