North Manitou Island

Located just west of Traverse City Michigan, about 7.5 hours from Indy. The island is only open to backpackers, and on a non-holiday weekend, you will be about one of 10-20 people on the island. This trip will require a Friday off due to the ferry schedule. This place has something for everyone. There are 20 miles of sandy beaches, a secluded inland lake, 25 miles of trails, old homesteads, eagles, plovers, dunes, an old apple orchard.

We'll be departing for Michigan Thursday evening. We have to be at the dock at 9am to register and purchase ferry tickets ($32). We'll be spending Friday night and Saturday night on the island. On Sunday morning we'll take the ferry back to the mainland.

Wow.. Great. Swimming, Hiking, night-time stars that can never be seen in Indiana, great people. A very low cost for a lifetime experience and memory.

For those who may not know Indiana highways.....I do not recommend the "MapQuest" method of taking I65 to Gary and the Toll road. The US 31 options has too many towns and stoplights. I suggest taking 37 to 13 to 15 to 103 to 131. (or stay on 13 which turns into 131. Then in Michigan taking the "MapQuest" method. While 13 is two lanes, it is straight, little traffic, few towns, and more direct. Your views may differ...but look at a map before you follow the GPS. Dale

Just got back from my 2011 Michigan Tour with a stop on North Manitou Island. We camped at the pier ruins. Flies were biting but hardly a mosquito to be found. Have a great time!!!!

I don't get off work until 6pm on Thursday, which would put me on the north side of Indy about 6:30. I don't want to keep everyone waiting, but I'd really like to get a ride with someone if at all possible...

not sure where to post logistics, but pitching this idea. We meet at my house at 5, park cars & leave in my car (we all fit--minivan). I drive there. Dale and Brett drive home (I'm detouring into NW IN on the way home).

Lisa--you need 2 cans of 3.53oz (100g) isobutane/propane mix. I'd ask for jet boil fuel. I tried to post a pic, but link was too long. LMK if you need more info. Most likely one is enough...but I'd take extra just in case. Holly

I can take one person with comfort and two a little tight. Please let me know. If none contact me for a ride, I will go up in the morning to tour and enjoy the area. Then meet with the group later in the day. Dale dmarmad/@/sbcglobal.net (Greenwood)

Phil--do you have carpool info? Didn't see or missed it. Also, I do not have a camp stove and am wondering if I can use someone's for the trip--probabaly to just heat water or soup.
