PHP101

  • Jan 26, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

As we've had several people attend meetings who are new to PHP and express an interest in learning it, or learning it better, we've organized a regular monthly training class.

  • No prior knowledge of PHP is necessary to attend, although having some html or programming experience or at least general computer experience would be helpful.
  • Bring a laptop, netbook, or tablet with keyboard - all you need is web browser - WiFi provided
  • Lessons will be presented during class and also accessable online
  • You will be able to review and repeat material at home after class
  • Classes will be 1-1.5 hours of material presented, with time afterwards for discussion or digging deeper into a subject of interest

I've posted Lesson1 (Sat Feb 2) on github here: https://github.com/IndyPHP/php101/blob/master/Lesson1.md

Please let me know if this material is working for you, or if it's too slow and we should be covering ground faster.

The classroom space has been confirmed, and we will begin promptly at 1pm with some introductory lessons on html, github, and basic php. All lesson materials will be available online, so if you are unable to attend you will still be able to follow along. I will also post the 4 (one per week) lessons for the next class that you can do at your own pace and we will review at the next class. We will also be trying out a google hangout, live youtube feed, and will make the videos available as well.

The date/time isn't official yet, but the location will be PLTW because the Downtown library doesn't have space for more than 10 without charging for a large meeting room. Please comment if you have a concern or suggestion.

The results of of the survey (so far):

21 people responded that they want to attend

17 for Tuesday, 18 for Saturday morning, and 20 for Saturday afternoon.

The downtown library is the most popular location, food is not needed, and nearly even between 1-1.5 and 2 hrs as max session length.

We also have a really great list of subject matter of interest, but clearly will be starting from the ground up before branching into higher level topics.

I'll get the location & time finalized shortly and update the meeting.

Thanks to all those who responded to the survey!

The organization I work for has offered to allow us to use our new training center to hold meetings once or twice a month. We can comfortably hold 40 people. Has full PC to TV display capabilities, Speaker podium with Microphone, Microphones at the table, Video Conferencing. Everything we could need and they are allowing us to use it Free of Charge. We are located at 96th and Keystone. I'll add it as the place and if anyone would like to change please feel free.

That's phenomenal! Thanks! Is that available on both Saturday and Tuesday evenings, or just Saturday?

The space is available most evenings and weekends. There will be times it is not available but most of the time after 5:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends it will be available.

I would definitely go to one of these. I'm very new to php and would love some one on one advice. I like the downtown library. Only downfall is no booze.

Sure! Sounds great to me. December 22 is the first Saturday I could personally make it but I'm sure I'll be able to attend one sometime in January as well.

If it's a small enough group and someone can source a projector, we may be able to host this event at our downtown house. BYOB of course.
