Mission Statement: The purpose of the organization is to train a corps of adult volunteers in all aspects of Nature thus empowering them to volunteer in their communities promoting awareness, appreciation and stewardship of the Natural World.

To become a Certified Master Naturalist requires 40 hours of basic training including a minimum of 3 field trips, 8 hours of advanced training in an area of expertise, and 40 hours of volunteer service within 12 consecutive months of beginning training. Areas of expertise include: Interpretation, curriculum based Education, Recreation, Citizen Science, and Stewardship. To re-certify annually requires 40 hours of volunteer service, payment of dues, and 8 hours of advanced training.

Curriculum units (2016) are: Ecology of woodlands, forest, prairie, wetlands; Tree identification and natural history, forest habitat zones, spring wildflowers: mushrooms, lichen, mosses, liverworts, into to botany, taxonomy, seeds; Iowa Geology, landforms and soils; Iowa waterbodies (lentic, lotic), wetlands, watersheds, water quality, aquifers; Herpetology: Birding; Interpretation, Nature spirituality, Citizen Science; Mammals identification and natural history; Entomology, butterflies, dragonflies, lady bugs; Ichthyology, shells, mussels, crayfish: Prairies, grasses, forbs; Ecological concepts, soil ecology, earth worms; Nature at night, Pal-Dows Observatory, katydid, cricket, cicada, frog calls; Linn and Johnson County Natural Areas and Parks, Phenology, nature journaling.

Iowa Master Naturalists was incorporated as an Iowa nonprofit in June 2015 and was given IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt designation in August 2015.
