La Befana vien di notte
Con le scarpe tutte rotte
Col vestito alla romana
Viva, Viva La Befana!
We're watching La Freccia Azzurra, an animated film about the old Italian woman who flies on a broom delivering candy and gifts to children on the eve of the Epiphany. (The Epiphany is January 6, so this Meetup is timely, isn't it?)
The story recounts how the Befana was sick in bed one year, leaving Italian bambini at risk of not getting any treats! Her evil assistant Dottore Scarafoni sees the situation as his opportunity to make a few lire and sell the toys and gifts instead of giving them away. Scarafoni tells the poor boy Francesco he'll never get the Blue Arrow train he wants. But the toys take matters into their own hands, and led by the stuffed dog Spiccola, deliver themselves to the good girls and boys.
The plan is to watch the movie via YouTube. Which means it's contingent on the Internet working okay. Also, there are no subtitles. It's a children's movie, so the language shouldn't be too difficult to understand.
Feel free to watch it in advance and then bring your notes and questions and vocabulary list to the Meetup. There should be time afterwards for discussion.
The movie runs 90 minutes. We'll try to start it by about 2:15. The library closes at 5:00.
