Working in Singapore and Asia
If you can't come to the Meetup, check out the audio for the Meetup. I will post short and long versions sharing what we have discussed before about working in Singapore. Singapore is a high-income economy with a gross national income of $55,150 per capita (Atlas Method), as of 2014. The country provides the world’s most business-friendly regulatory environment for local entrepreneurs and is ranked among the world’s most competitive economies . Does the ‘why’ correlate to the ‘where’ you want to work? Some people I have met have wanted to work in the US, UK, EU or other countries where English was spoken and where there is an advanced economy with a variety of jobs. The common point was an interest in the culture of the country they wanted to live in, and some experience with the people that sparked their interest in working overseas. While you might have a friend or acquaintance who lives in a country and be interested to experience their culture, some other people are interested in the culture from books, movies or other sources of information. Travel to a foreign country could be the start of an interest in learning more about another culture that ends with a desire to live overseas and experience that culture more directly. Whether as a student or for pleasure, getting some experience living in a foreign culture before committing to a long-term stay can help explore how strong the feeling is, and whether it is likely to be a positive experience. Motivations and Perspectives In this age of information sharing and a globally-connected community that can connect around food, hobbies and any other shared interests, it is easy to find and connect with people in other countries. I studied Japanese in university and then went over to visit Japan after graduation, staying with my former language exchange partner while I explored Kyoto and Osaka. Answering the Question Whether you find the answer to the why of living and working overseas before you go or while you there, it will probably be one of the most-asked questions you encounter from people you meet. One of the first questions might be, “Where are you from?”, and then after that, “Why are you here?” The things that make up your answer might change over time and are hard to express simply in short conversations, or you’ll have an answer that shows your thoughts at the time and can be expressed in a sentence or two that then leads to discussions about your country and background. Global Career Information Meetup Next Meetup Date October 27th,[masked]:00 PM It is a Standup Meetup which will run for 90 minutes, and be standing. It is mostly Q&A, but I will talk about other members and my own search for jobs internationally. It is 500 yen which covers the costs of the meetup, and it is in English. Location: We will meet in the lobby of the Ebisu Garden Place tower and the meetup takes place in a public space so it may be a little bit noisy. If anyone wants to grab a coffee afterwards, there is also a coffee shop in the 1st floor (excelsior or Starbucks).
