Study group, Nihongo no benkyoo

I live within bus distance to downtown. There is a nice cafe called "The Hideout" on Congress St, there are also other cafes there. Would anyone be interested in language study? I am flexible in my schedule right now.

I would like to attend, but I moved, and can't get in to town for the meetings until I get transportation. I am still trying. The others had suggested holding a study group at one of the Austin Libraries. For now I am only able to use Skype; I believe you can have at least 3 people at once.

Is this still going on? I can't find any activity on the group page after January 30th.

This should probably be a discussion directed at the entire group (mailing list under Discussion). Only those who attended this specific event will be getting messages posted here.

I can call them, which branch does everyone want to meet at? There are so many, I'd like to pick the one that most people can get to.

I have started to do a little research for our next meeting place. Possibly, one of the public libraries might be best: http://library.austintexas.gov/basic-page/meeting-rooms

Layne, do you want to contact them about a regular meeting room? I can do it if you are too busy.

I was so pleased that so many people are interested in studying, and very happy to hear that everybody seemed to want to do it more often. Twice a month would be great. It was so awesome to see how easily everybody split up into groups and studied, and how people shared material, and water. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun!

Great! Let's do study/chat groups like this more often!

    > I decided to bring 2 calligraphy sets. I have everything for 2 people, but I can only find 1 of my brushes!! AHH! If there's someone else who has fude, it would be nice to have at least one more. Yoroshiku!

Cool! Thanks for all this planning and hard work! About materials, I have a lot for beginner, chuukyuu, and joukyuu nihongo. No duplicates on texts, though. I'll bring my stuff along so people can check it out. By the way, splitting up into groups seems like a good idea. Would the 2-kyuu holders and up be willing to lead little study groups? I have 1-kyuu, and I'd be happy to help in any way I can!

I got left a message from Whole foods, they said what I thought they would say: they are fine with us coming but they don't reserve seats. There is an area upstairs, an outdoor tented area above the store. That seems like the place with the most room, so that's where I'll be.

I called Whole Foods and was transferred to an office that was not open, left a message. I'll let you know.

Wasn't sure if they have meeting rooms. Outdoor seating is good. But we should probably make sure it is OK with them.

What do you mean "a room" at Whole Foods? Whole foods does not have rooms. They have two large seating areas outdoors, one at ground level and one up on the balcony. I had no idea so many people would be attending, I only clicked on "suggest a meetup". It's the best I can think of, I just moved here, I had no idea this might entail making a reservation somewhere.

I have so many books and study aids, all bearing witness to my many renewed vows to finally be diligent. I'm a beginner but don't mind studying only with other beginners. Do we have a room at Whole Foods?

Seeing as there are so very many of us, I was thinking it would be a good idea to bring materials, books, laptops, etc. and split into smaller groups, either of matching skill level, or with one very skilled person willing to share their abilities with those of a lower level; whatever each group wants.

By the way, what kind of "study group" do you want this to be? Should we bring any materials?

I guess when you ride a motorcycle they don't seem to care so much about where you leave it, especially if you go inside the initial establishment first. I've never had a problem leaving the bike somewhere. I'm sorry if I was ignorant about how diligent authorities are with cars.

I only made a suggestion for a meetup group, I had no idea this many people would want to go and I wanted to ask people first what worked well for them before I made it final. I was just trying to be courteous.

yeah, heard it the first time, gonna be canceled, yeah, heard it. By the way I'm pretty sure I DID finalize it.

    January 20, 2012

  • Larry

Yes, 17 people are RSVP'ed, and more may come, which is why you need to finalize this (since it was your idea) and it will be canceled if you don't. :)

When did you say you moved to Austin? :)

In downtown and West Campus, leaving your car at one establishment then jetting to another one means you like to give towing companies your money. There are watchers and they'd love the business.

I recommend calling the establishment ahead of time to see if they can accommodate us, both for space and noise. That may help you decide the place.

HOLY I just noticed 17 people are going!!! WOW! UHH I really don't think that Starbucks can hold that many, but Whole foods has a huge outdoor area for seating.... both above on the balcony and down below... is that OK?

the other two might. We could meet at one and go from there. Each place has wifi, and seats both indoors and out. But Book People and Starbucks have limited seating. Also, each establishment has its own parking, though it is a bit longer bus ride for me. Even if you parked at one, and had to go to another, it would still be super close because they're all so near each other.

Well, some say downtown is good, some say it isn't. My man just got a new job and now it looks like I very well may have to rely on the bus myself. It seems that there are just about 4 of us, and although The Hideout has the best seats and wifi as far as I'm concerned, and may be the quietest place, there is also the option of making it at Book People, Whole Foods, or Starbucks. This is pretty much 6th and Lamar. They are all exactly right next to each other, so if one doesn't have seats, (cont)

I prefer weekends, since I work out of town during the week, anytime in the day is good. I prefer a place other than downtown since parking is a pain, and finding a place that can accommodate a decently-sized group may be a challenge. My skill level is beginner.

Hey, it is really nice to see some people interested in meeting up to study! Would you all be interested in Saturday the 28th? Is noon a good time? I also know of a coffee shop called "The Hideout Theatre", they have comfortable seats and wifi. My skill level is probably just a bit past beginner. If this all sounds good to you, I can make it final and see who RSVP's?

Any location is fine with me. I guess I am about "beginner 2" - have been studying for about a year. Weekends are best; Tu, Th or Fri evenings are OK. I can't make it next week Tues through Thursday.

This event has a significant number of interested people, so someone needs to make this happen. Therefore, I've now made Layne the event host. Since it was her suggestion, she is therefore responsible for it.

Since everyone's case is different, what would be helpful is if people leave their preferences to help plan the event:
    - Day and time preference
    - Location preference
    - Skill level

The event will be canceled if date and location are not finalized by next Friday.
