I am a beginner in speaking Japanese and understanding a Japanese speaker. I can slowly read & write Katakana & Hiragana & I recognize the meaning of several Kanjii, but I can only read & write the most basic of Japanese sentences. However this small knowledge has served me well when encountering Japanese people.
I lived & studied at Yokota AFB near Fussa, Tokyo in 1973-75. As a teenager, I was able to travel to a few cities near Tokyo by train, bus & bicycle; we went ice skating at Ome, visited the volcanic beaches & made a few trips to Summerland. I worked for 2 months in Utsunomia in 1995 & visited the shrine in Nikko. In 2014, I worked at NAF Atsugi near Ayase in Kanagawa for 5 months; I visited Fuji, Kamakura, Yokohama, Enoshima, Odawara & Tokyo & became very familiar with living in the Ayase/Ebina/Yamato area. In October 2016, I had meetings in the Akita area & took a week of vacation around Yokohama & Kamakura.
The land, people, language, art, music & technology are wonderful in many, many ways.
