Kiba Park is a big, gorgeous, green space in Koto Ward, and it's not far from the justly famous "Daimyo-landscape" garden, "Kiyosumi Teien" which was created in the 18th & 19th centuries.
🐟🐢🦆
Before attending the great Oedo Mikoshi Festival, let's get acquainted while taking a stroll along the paths of beautiful, historic Kiyosumi Teien Gardens!
🌃🍁🌿
The beautifully🌃 managed grounds of Kiyosumi Garden (清澄庭園, Kiyosumi Teien) were originally the residence of an Edo-era merchant (Edo: 1603-1868)
🔆
Ownership eventually changed to a feudal lord who turned them the estate into an impressive "Daimyo" garden, the landscaping of which attempts to replicate famous places of beauty from around Japan. During the Meiji Period, Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of Mitsubishi bought the garden to entertain his guests. It was donated to the city and opened to the public in 1932.
🐢
A highlight of the landscape garden are the many impressive stones set around the grounds, plus, the many remarkable water-birds who make their homes these!
🐟
Such landscape stones are highly sought after and valuable, and some of the ones in the garden are famous stones that were acquired from all across Japan.
🦆
When strolling the garden's grounds be sure to venture across the stepping stone paths that are set in the water. This is called "isowatari", and from these great stones you can see fish and turtles under the surface of the pond as well as reflections of the garden in the water.
🐟🌅🐢
Halfway around the garden stands a teahouse-styled building, "Ryoutei House", which appears to hover over the water from across the pond, but cannot be entered. Near the garden entrance is the Taisho Kinen-kan, a memorial hall of Emperor Taisho. We may see the beautiful Matsuo Basho poetry monument, the traditional Yagura-style Kiyosumi Clock Tower plus many wonderful birds, animals, plants & more.
🌿
Walking from the gardens, we'll pass through an old & historic area. We'll visit the Historical Landmark / grave of renowned Explorer Rinzo Mamiya, & stroll through lovely Fukutomigawa Park on our way to the Mikoshi Festival.
