Creative Photography in Colonial Williamsburg

Join photographers Jason P. Odell and Deborah Sandidge for a hands-on creative photography experience. On this workshop, you will learn the techniques for perfecting fine-art photography in and around the historical sites of Colonial Williamsburg. Photograph historical architecture, spring blooms and gardens, and people dressed in period clothing. You'll master new digital techniques like HDR and texture blending with Photoshop and learn to look at your subjects from a different point of view.

Each day, your instructors will not only assist you in the field, but also on your computer using the latest digital software tools.

You'll Learn:

  • Style and Composition
  • Color digital photography
  • Macro & close-up photography
  • Long-exposure photography
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography
  • Black & White (monochrome) conversions
  • Photoshop effects, including Texture Blending and layer masking


Thursday, April 25: Orientation session at group hotel begins at 4pm.

Friday, April 26: Photography on location in Williamsburg area, followed by lunch break. Mid-day sessions on post-processing techniques and image review. Evening shooting on location.

Saturday, April 27: Location shooting in the Williamsburg/Yorktown area. Mid-day image review/critique sessions and post-processing instruction. Evening location shooting TBD.

Sunday, April 28th: Sunrise shooting session TBD. Depart for home by 10am.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal for photographers of any level who wish to explore the in-depth techniques of creative post-processing. We strongly recommend that you bring a laptop computer so that you can process your own images each day.

Workshop Fees

Your workshop fee of $749.99 per photographer includes all field and classroom instruction and personal image reviews with Jason & Deborah. Lodging, meals, and transportation to the field sites is not included.

We have arranged for a discounted block of rooms at the Fairfield Inn & Suites, Williamsburg. You will be notified upon registration how to get the group discount of $109/night. Please do not contact the hotel until we give you the specific group reservation details.

Jason P. Odell, Ph.D.

Dr. Jason P. Odell is a creative outdoor photographer in Colorado, USA. He specializes in images of wildlife and landscapes presented with a creative flair. Jason's passion for photography started at a young age when his parents built a darkroom in their garage. Jason's interest in the outdoors and nature led him down the path of science, and he earned a doctorate in biology from the University of California Riverside. 

Jason is probably best-known for his comprehensive imaging software guides, which he started publishing in 2006 at Luminescence of Nature Press. Jason's guides have taught thousands of photographers how to tackle software like Nikon's Capture NX2 and Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro. Jason's ability to present technical material clearly, without losing focus of the creative process is why his books and workshops are extremely popular with hobbyists and enthusiasts world-wide. Jason's work has been featured by Studio Photographer Magazine, Nik Software, and Tiffen, Inc.

Deborah Sandidge

Deborah Sandidge is a professional photographer who enjoys sharing her insight and creative ideas through workshops, seminars and writing. She is the author of Digital Infrared Photography, published by Wiley. As an instructor at, Deborah teaches Enhancing Images and Creating Works of Art, Digital Infrared Photography, and will soon offer a new course on Creative Long Exposure Photography.

Deborah offers a wide variety of creative and technical skills in her workshops, classes, and seminars, making time spent with her educational and fun for all skill levels. She shares many innovative tips and techniques to inspire the photographer to create unique imagery through enhanced photography skills, and artistic image optimization. Deborah’s style of creating dramatic story-telling imagery reflects in her travels, and interaction with the people she meets. She has had the opportunity to photograph interesting people, unique architecture, and experience fascinating cultures in many countries throughout out the world. Deborah loves to blend travel and teaching, offering her expertise and insight to others through photography tours and workshops. She enjoys creative work in the digital darkroom, and considers Photoshop her artist’s palette. Deborah is a guest author for Nik Software, Topaz Labs, Naturescapes, and collaborated with Nikon Learn & Explore site for star and star trail photography. Deborah’s images have been used by Nikon for trade shows, brochures, product guides, and for the past three years, the Nikon World Calendar. She is a North American Rogue Team member for f-Stop Gear, and is partnered with Feisol Tripods. Deborah’s photography is represented by Danita Delimont, Alamy, Novastock, Positive Images and Aurora.

    The workshop was very well organized with a clear plan of shooting objectives in which the participants were shown hands on new shooting techniques and ideas by Jason. The use of and when to use different filters was also explained . The group was great and very supportive of each other .
