jQuery Basics

A basic introduction to the powerful jQuery library for the newbies and beginners in the group. Bring a laptop if you'd like to follow along with some of the examples covered in the class.

Your presenters will be:

Mario Noble covering basic animations. Mario has been a web designer for about eight years with three years of experience freelance and about six company based. Pretty excited about hybrid mobile development and creating things that are relevant to people's lives. Currently, works as a front end developer for Astek Inc.

Natalie MacLees covering selectors. Natalie is a front-end web developer and UI designer. She spends her days on the product team at, a start-up that is crowdsourcing the creation of a single family tree of the world. She heads up the SoCal WordPress Meetup along with the jQuery LA Meetup. She is currently writing jQuery for Designers for Packt Publishing.

Location note: Yahoo has alerted me that sometimes people confuse the Yahoo Center at 2400 Broadway with the Water Gardens at 2400 Colorado. Please be sure you're on Broadway and looking for Yahoo. ;-)

Parking info: Street parking after 6pm, mostly on the Broadway side of the building. Pay parking available underground.

I just uploaded the pre-loader script to the files page, "under the more link" Put this in the head of your page so it will excute BEFOE any of your page. It will essentially create a string of all the images that you specify and load them before any of your page executes. You can see a use senerio in the OCT 2011 meeting files @ If you have any questions drop me an e-mail.

It was well-presented and professional. If I didn't know anything about jQuery already, I might have been a bit lost, because even though it tried to cover basics, many core concepts were skipped over. I learned a few things, and was happy that the presenters were quick to answer questions. I was pleasantly surprised to see pizza and drinks when I arrived. Thanks Natalie and Mario!

Because I already had a good understanding of jQuery, the event was productive for me. I can imagine though how it might have been hard to follow for a complete newbie. It would be helpful if the presenter used more technical language to highlight the similarities between jQuery and other technologies.

It would have been nice if Natalie had introduced herself and told us a little about why she was motivated to present this information. I mean why does Natalie care why I know jquery? The discussion about animation was helpful in opening up what is going on in jq and has given me a view into how to use the jq site. Ajax seems to be a pretty hot issue and it would be nice to have that as a future subject. Thank you for the pizza and soda!

Well, I'm not "new" to JQuery, but it is interesting to hear how other people present it fresh.

REALLY sorry that I can't make it. I have another obligation. Will there be any post-meeting video of the presentation?
