Shoot and give back / Street photography & Rami-Con@ the Riverside Arts Market

Photog's and videographers here's your chance to capture some special moments and help out in our community.

This meetup was inspired by this video - please take a moment to watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9i6rApq-RQ&feature=youtu.be

We'll meet at Hemming Plaza and give some of Jacksonville's homeless community something to smile about (see video) and capture those digital moments and on video.  (We will be respectful of anyone that does not want to have their photo/video taken.)  We'll walk around Hemming Plaza and surrounding areas to give out the donated items.

Once all the donations have been given out we can go to Rami-Con@ the Riverside Arts Market (open 10am-4pm).  (this is phase two of this meetup) - Rami-Con = pay tribute to all things CON! RAM celebrates Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Cosplay/Comics/Anime and Gaming at the first ever RAMi-Con! Costume contest on the River Stage at 2 pm (more info to follow). Plus – It’s BEER DAY! There are food vendors at RAM - cause you know photog's gotta eat!!

Suggested items:

• Bottled water

• Fresh Fruit (easy to eat by hand) Apples, Bananas, Oranges (Citrus), Pears etc....

• Granola / Breakfast bars

Personal Hygiene Products: (the Dollar Store is a great resource)

You'll want these items to be portable and easy to use, some examples would be:

• Hand wipes

• Hand sanitizer

• Toothbrush and toothpaste

• Donated clothes, shoes, socks.

    Hey guys,

I didn't get a chance to take any pictures but was so pleased with the turn out and results for the project that I went back and updated my blog. Wonder what famous (and masked) humanitarians you might see there?

Michelle, how many people should I be prepared for? I've done this with our church at nursing homes, but don't know what to expect on the street. Should items be pre- bagged?

    1 · August 22, 2013

    • Michelle T.

Hi Daryll, honestly I have no idea how many. If you would like to prepare yours in advance that would be great, maybe pick a number of people you'll like to help that day and prepare that number.
I have paper bags from Public that we can use to put supplies on & I know some other Photogs are going to bring bottled water & fruit & maybe some clothes. :-)

Does everyone have their items they plan on giving away on Saturday morning?
Please keep in mind this is a volunteer opportunity as well as an opportunity to take photos. Please come prepared to give out items as well as help distribute items.
    Thank you!!

    Hey gang,
I did a little video on my encounter when I mixed up the date for the meetup and added it to my blog. I hope it provides an indication of why I think this is a great idea for the group.

This will be my first meetup. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and getting help being the best that I can be. I've had a love for taking street shots and this is a great opportunity to give back also.

On a different note, somehow I got the dates mixed up and thought the event was THIS morning. I waited and waited and finally met one friendly guy who introduced me to a couple of the guys in the park and helped me distribute the little gift bags I made up. The guys there were very appreciative of the gifts I left and lets me know the real event should more than heartwarming once I got back home and reread the announcement.

I'm sorry to hear you got the dates mixed up, but glad to hear you had a good experience. You're welcome to come again next time. Thx!!

Don't know how I got the dates mixed up because looking at the calendar I had planned to make a day of it and attend the Springfield Cruising event later in the day. I simply wanted the group to know any reservations I had before were removed by my experience and with the group in full force (along with donations such as MJ's) it truly will be a worthy event. I will be there no doubt about it!

Michelle, It simply added a bit of fun to a very heavy topic.

I'm on-call, and shouldn't leave Ga, but I have a lot of shirts and hats to donate as well as a couple of back-pack style bags on wheels, andd some personal hygiene products for women that I'd love to drop off. I'll try to be there at the start, don't know how long I'll get to stay.

Sounds great! Thank you so much for helping out!! :-)

The gifts might make a difference but when I have attempted to take pictures at Hemming Plaza in the past there was a tremendous amount of resistance to having their pictures taken. But, the area can be a fun place on the weekends because the vibe is very different than during the week. I'm game to give it a go!
