Photography 100: Introduction to Digital Photography

  • Oct 19, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Are you new to photography? Do you own a DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced point and shoot camera? Do you want to learn about why your camera functions the way that it does? Then this class is for you.

This class is the first of a 3-part series (Photography 100, 101, and 102). I highly recommend that you consider signing up for all three classes, especially if you are new to digital photography. Each of the three classes has its own meetup page, and you must sign up on each page individually, if you wish to attend each class.

There is no cost for this class. The class size will be limited 30 persons.

This class will be an intensive introduction to the basic concepts of digital photography. It is intended for persons who are new to digital photography, or persons who are moving from a point and shoot camera to a DSLR, or persons who use an advanced point and shoot camera and want to learn more about how it works.

The class will start by introducing the photographic triangle and the concept of stops of exposure, and then will advance to taking pictures in program, aperture, and shutter priority modes. Finally, the class will cover taking pictures in full manual mode, and making adjustments in manual mode to achieve the correct exposure.

Participants must bring their camera manual, because the class will go back to it again and again.

The class will go from 10:00 AM until around 5:45 PM. We will take a very short break in the middle for lunch.

Class requirements for everyone:

-Bring something to take notes.

- Digital camera with fresh batteries.
- Empty memory card.
- The camera's instruction manual.

For this, you will need the 100+ page camera manual. If the only printed material that you have is a quick start guide or something that is less than 30 or 40 pages, then that is not the camera manual. The manual will either be on your camera's DVD, or you will have to download it before class. If you don't bring the full manual with you, you will not be able to keep up in the class.

Syllabus

-An introduction to how the camera works

-Camera battery and picture card operation

-Auto focus and manual focus

-Learn exposure: effect of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO (the photographic triangle)

-Learn how to use your camera beyond the automatic mode (Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual).

-Manual mode exercise/Getting a correct exposure

-Review of the class materials

Excellent introductory course to digital photography. Topics were very well organized and clearly presented. I learned far more than I expected to learn in just one day- especially with respect to manually adjusting and understanding shutter speeds, apertures, and iso settings on my digital camera. A copy of the camera manual and posted materials was very helpful to have on hand.

    Larry,

A family emergency has come up that requires me to go out of town and I wanted to let you know so someone else could have my spot. I'm trying to do this so that whoever gets it has as much notice as possible. sorry!

Susan, social media messaging is not the venue to repeatedly air differences of opinion or to try multiple times at gaining understanding of a situation. These types of things should be handled by directly contacting the person(s) so that the issue can be resolved. At that time, if the host has determined that there needs to be additional instructions, they can post this information. A phone call or email directly to Larry was needed in this instance. I am a fairly new member of the group, but if I, or someone else, was looking to join, this conversation may have steered me away. You being ticked off because you could have stayed in bed "IS NOT" something that the other members should have seen either directly or indirectly. Social media is a wonderful tool if used properly! That said, I am so looking forward to attending my first meetup class. I want to thank all those involved for putting this together and will be looking forward to learning and meeting new friends.

Everyone signed up (and on the waiting list): I have (again) uploaded the syllabus and handouts for the class to the site. On the menu bar above, go to More....Files, and download the THREE files with Photo 100 in the name. You will need to have them in class, either paper or electronic, your choice. My advice is to have them in paper, because then you can take notes right on them, but it's each student's individual choice.

Note that there are THREE (3) files!!

If anyone has any questions, drop me an email, and see everyone on Saturday!!

Hi. When will we know if we are in the class or on the waiting list? Do we just show up Saturday in hopes someone doesn't if we are next available 5?

    October 14, 2013

    • Larry H.

That being said, you are welcome to show up on Saturday, and see if you get in. It would depend on whether RSVP folks don't show up, leaving open spots, and who from the waiting list showed up. For example, if two RSVP persons are no-shows, and 5 from the waiting list show up, then the top two from the waiting list will get into the class. I hope that this explanation is helpful, but if not, please email me directly.

For those waiting, my attendance is based on my husband's work schedule and there seems to be a growing possibility that he will have to work saturdays starting possibly this weekend (he's navy and we won't find out till Friday evening.) I will cancel my attendance as soon as I know if I have to.

    September 23, 2013

  • Aneesh H.

Hi Larry ... Nice of you to hold the classes again, I have already shared the info to friends interested in learning.... I would love to do the class 103 again .... The walk and click session ...... :) which is the location though ... ?

    September 22, 2013

    • Larry H.

The hands on part of the 102 will either be at Walter Jones Park, or Castaway Preserve Park. Please keep an eye on the writeup in the 102 class to see which one it is. Right now it says Walter Jones, but I'll decide which one for sure as the date is closer. Thanks, and I will look forward to seeing you again, Aneesh!!

      September 22, 2013

    • Aneesh H.

      Thank you Larry. Sure.

      September 22, 2013

  • Larry H.

For those of you who have commented about not being able to sign up, please look at the page, below the RSVP button. You will see that RSVP's open 2 weeks prior to the class, on October 5 at 6:00 AM. On that date and time, anyone can RSVP to attend the class. While I post the classes with plenty of time for folks to know about them, I only have the RSVP's open two weeks prior because of past experience with the signups. What I found when I opened the RSVP's long before was that people would sign up for the classes, not really knowing if they would be attending, but just to ensure that they would get a spot, in case they did decide to attend. Come class day, the no show rate would be on the order of 40%, but those folks would either not cancel, or would do so on the day of the class, so that folks on the waiting list, who would get bumped up to attend by the cancellation, could not change their plans to attend.

    1 · September 22, 2013

    • Larry H.

As a result, that actual class would have only about 60% of the attendees, but a waiting list of folks who wanted to attend, as large as the class itself.
Because of those situations, I hold the RSVP's to two weeks prior, so that folks who sign up have a much better idea of whether they can actually attend, before signing up.
If anyone has any issue or concerns with this practice, please contact Frank, the head Organizer for the group. Otherwise, please read what the page says about when the RSVP's open, before lamenting in a comment that you are not able to RSVP.

      Thank you.
