Photography 101: Hands on Introduction to the Digital Camera

  • Jan 11, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note that RSVP's for this class open on Saturday, January 4 at 6:00 AM.

Are you new to digital photography, or making the switch to digital from film? Do you have an understanding of photographic concepts, but want to learn how they translate to your camera? Do you want to learn some of your camera's features, and how to use them? Do you own a DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced point and shoot camera? Then this class is for you.

This class is the second of a 3-part series (Photography 100, 101, and 102). I highly recommend that you consider signing up for all three classes, especially if you are new to digital photography. Each of the three classes has its own meetup page, and you must sign up on each page individually, if you wish to attend each class.

There is no cost for the class. The class size will be limited 25 persons.

This class will be an intensive hands-on session on learning how to operate the camera. We will learn where the camera controls are, and what they do. The emphasis will be on hands on manipulation of the camera settings. Participants must bring their camera manual, because the class will go back to it again and again.

The class will go from 10:00 AM until 5:30 PM. We will break in the middle for lunch.

Note the class prerequisites: Your attendance in the class assumes that you understand the following:

ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture, and how the three relate to each other.

Also, the class assumes that you understand the concept of stops of exposure. In other words, if the instructor tells you to increase your exposure by two stops using aperture, you understand what that means and can do it on your camera.

If you don't understand the above, please sign up for the Photo 100 class before attending this class.

Class requirements for everyone:

- Bring something to take notes.

- Digital camera with fresh batteries.
- Empty memory card.
- The camera's instruction manual.

For this, you will need the 100+ page camera manual. If the only printed material that you have is a quick start guide or something that is less than 30 or 40 pages, then that is not the camera manual. The manual will either be on your camera's DVD, or you will have to download it before class. If you don't bring the full manual with you, you will not be able to keep up in the class.

I hate to cancel at the next-to last minute but I'm also going to remove my RSVP - still fighting a cold and don't want to spread it to the group. I'll look forward to it the next time you offer the class!

I am going to un-RSVP to give someone else my place in class. The pain from the car accident that I was in has taken a turn for the worse. Hope to get into the next series whenever it is offered again. I am disappointed because I have waited a year to get in this class.

    Called to work Tomorrow...

Everyone signed up (and on the waiting list):

I have uploaded the syllabus for the class to the site.

On the menu bar above, go to More....Files, and download the file with Photo 101 in the name.

You will need to have it in class, either paper or electronic, your choice. My advice is to have it in paper, because then you can take notes right on it, but it's each student's individual choice.

If anyone has any questions, drop me an email, and see everyone on Saturday!!

  • Tebayane R.

Hello, could you please tell me where I am on the wait list, how many are allowed in the class before it closes and is there another group like this one in the area? I'm new to Jax and trying to meet new friends and activities. Thanks: ) Tebayane

    January 9, 2014

    • Darlene Wallace W.

Tebayane, The waitlist lists people in the order they responded. It looks like you are approximately 9th on that list. Originally, 25 persons could attend. Due to the high demand, we expanded that to 30 (add the three hosts and you get the 33 listed as attending). A class any larger would not fit in some of the library rooms or provide the level of one on one help that is sometimes needed. The meetup site does allow you to search your various interests to find groups in a designated area. There are many meetups coming up in this group as well as others. Welcome to Jax.

    Hi Darlene and Larry,
I have to cancel on Saturday. I have a scheduling conflict. I hope to be able to make the next time. Thanks so much for last Saturday. I learned a lot. I am sure some one on the waiting list will be able to take my spot.
    Thanks Antoinette

    • Darlene Wallace W.

Thank you for letting us know, Antoinette. Also thanks for changing your RSVP. The system automatically moved the first person on the wait list to your spot! ;)

I just missed the Photography 100 class. Will there be another one coming up soon?

    January 7, 2014

    • Darlene Wallace W.

Alicia, with work and family schedules, it probably won't be until late spring or summer before we are able to offer the class again.

If you do not have the large user manual or a CD that came with your camera, below are links to some Nikon and Canon manuals. If you are unable to print, feel free to bring the version electronically. You will definitely need the larger manual in this class!!
