Photography 101: Hands on Introduction to the Digital Camera

  • Mar 22, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note that RSVP's for this class open on Saturday, March 15 at 6:00 AM.

Are you new to digital photography, or making the switch to digital from film? Do you have an understanding of photographic concepts, but want to learn how they translate to your camera? Do you want to learn some of your camera's features, and how to use them? Do you own a DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced point and shoot camera? Then this class is for you.

This class is the second of a 3-part series (Photography 100, 101, and 102). I highly recommend that you consider signing up for all three classes, especially if you are new to digital photography. Each of the three classes has its own meetup page, and you must sign up on each page individually, if you wish to attend each class.

There is no cost for the class. The class size will be limited 25 persons.

This class will be an intensive hands-on session on learning how to operate the camera. We will learn where the camera controls are, and what they do. The emphasis will be on hands on manipulation of the camera settings. Participants must bring their camera manual, because the class will go back to it again and again.

The class will go from 10:00 AM until approximately 5:30 PM. We will break in the middle for lunch.

Note the class prerequisites: Your attendance in the class assumes that you understand the following:

ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture, and how the three relate to each other.

Also, the class assumes that you understand the concept of stops of exposure. In other words, if the instructor tells you to increase your exposure by two stops using aperture, you understand what that means and can do it on your camera.

If you don't understand the above, please sign up for the Photo 100 class before attending this class.

Class requirements for everyone:

- Bring something to take notes.

- Digital camera with fresh batteries.

- Empty memory card.

- The camera's instruction manual.

For this, you will need the 100+ page camera manual. If the only printed material that you have is a quick start guide or something that is less than 30 or 40 pages, then that is not the camera manual. The manual will either be on your camera's DVD, or you will have to download it before class. If you don't bring the full manual with you, you will not be able to keep up in the class.

Larry and I will not be teaching over the summer so that we can spend time with our families and also have the ability to get out and shoot. We anticipate possibly giving classes again in the fall. If you need instruction sooner, let us know and we can put you in contact with other photographers who offers classes/clinics, however, they are normally at a fee.

I am so sorry I missed this class. I figured being one of the people on the wait list I would be crowding the place. Reading the comments now, though, makes me very sad to not have gone. If any of the pictures I took at the Ravine Garden turn out, I'll be sure to post them!

I just wanted to add that I was one of the first 3 wait listed for this course but I am not going to make it due to a family commitment. I hope you all have a great class and pray I get to meet you all on some other event. My daughter is getting married in June and it's taking all of my time.

Hi all! At the 100 class, someone said that we can show up to any of the other classes but that we might not have a seat. I am wait listed. Can I still show up with the expectation that I might be standing or sitting on the floor? :)

    March 18, 2014

    • Darlene Wallace W.

When Larry mentioned that people are welcome to repeat a class, he was meaning each session. Repeat attendees generally do not need as much assistance. Attending the 100 class doesn’t qualify a person as a repeat for the 101.

Since you haven’t attended the 101 class previously, you are still considered a first time attendee, waitlisted, and not a repeat. For waitlisted people that want to show up, we ask the same as we do for returnees: Let the ones on the RSVP confirmed list get seated first. If more waitlisted arrive than there is space for, those that signed up first will get available seating. There is no way we could accommodate all confirmed and all on the waitlist.

Ahh! That makes more sense. I missed the "repeat" part of it! Thanks for the clarification.

Darlene or Larry Just curious of when the syllabus will be coming out for the 101 class! I enjoyed the last class and i am looking forward to this one!

    March 18, 2014

  • Larry H.

Everyone signed up (and on the waiting list):

I have uploaded the syllabus for the class to the site.

On the menu bar above, go to More....Files, and download the file with Photo 101 in the name.

You will need to have it in class, either paper or electronic, your choice. My advice is to have it in paper, because then you can take notes right on it, but it's each student's individual choice.

If anyone has any questions, drop Darlene or I an email, and see everyone on Saturday!!

When will Photography 100 be offered again?

    March 15, 2014

    • Larry H.

      Leonard--

Darlene and I volunteer our time to do the classes. As such, we schedule them when we have time available to do so. We don't know when the next set of classes will be, or if there will be a next set, as there are other obligations for both of us that take priority over the classes.
