Mainly classic hard bop: Monk, Miles and Mingus. I also dig Basie Swing and Nightclub Jazz, especially Bobby Darin, who I grew up emulating and got to meet many times in my teens when I was a jazz reporter in Detroit for seven years.
I sing, and studied voice the hard way at Northwestern, often in the beehive, where i was not a student, just a purchaser of lessons. I used to play back-up percussion but I sing with such amazing drummers that I try to limit even my background timekeeping. Steve Prince, Jose Rosa, Edgardo Rodriguez, Dimas Sanchez, Juan Torres---theses guys are masters. I used to sing in the circus and I always stood right next to the drummer vs. the caliope! Debuted in 1973 @ Kingston Mines Chicago.
Dr. K is the Saturday host of Hip Sets on NYC Pure Jazz Radio @ Purejazzradio.com on Saturdays @ 10 am and 10 pm. Ken has directed a Jazz Band in Orlando for the past ten years and was the afternoon radio host on an NPR jazz radio station for 9 yrs.
I was so grateful the the meet up group for a wonderful showing and delightful company. We had a total blast and everyone agreed we found a clubhouse&a place to meet-up, congregate and share each other's company in person.
