See Photos of Jenn's Colorado Trip

  • Feb 20, 2014 · 7:00 AM

This posting is just so you guys can see the photos I take while I'm in the Rockies.  I will be in Colorado from Feb. 11-20.  I'll add more throughout my trip.  Enjoy!

I came across a mountain lion kill while snowshoeing this morning.  The other shots might be a little too gruesome for Meetups.  There wasn't much left.  Magpies drew me to the kill.

Jennifer, these photos are cool! What kind of camera do you have and what lens did you use to get the wildlife photos?

I use a Sony DSC Series. It is not an SLR, and I don't have various lenses. I have a good zoom, but I am also very good at getting close to wildlife. However, sometimes I take chances that I do not suggest others take to get some good shots. For example, in some of the upcoming photos I will post, I got a good shot of a wild coyote after tracking it alone through some trees and prairie. That in itself isn't terribly safe, but you'll also see photos of a mule deer herd that I stumbled into by surprise with no quick escape and no cover. The buck squared off with me for a while. Luckily I was able to make myself smaller and nonthreatening and wait him out until he calmed down. Then, I was able to back out of the area. I'm pretty good at reading animals, and I've never gotten myself into serious trouble. If I had not known how to respond, that situation could have ended very poorly.

There is plenty for us to do, and round trip fares to Colorado are as little as $125 round trip. I will be planning a summer 4 day weekend trip for us to go up there. We will see a ton of wildlife. We will also be visiting the Garden of the Gods, Estes Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

You certainly capture the best moments in nature. Wish I could have gone with you but will be headed to Colorado as you are returning. Thanks for sharing.
