A hike and spelunking in San Antonio!

FINAL

To many of us transplants, June is already way too hot. So, we thought we’d make a trip to Natural Bridge Caverns with a 5-mile morning hike at McAllister Park in San Antonio.

Saturday

8:30 am hike at McCallister Park.  McAllister Park, 13102 Jones Maltsberger Rd, San Antonio, TX 78247.  Meet at the parking lot at the baseball diamonds at the end of ‘Pvt Rd’ – see map.  To get to this parking lot, enter the park at the Jones Maltsberger Road (northwest corner), bear left and follow ‘Pvt Rd/Turkey Roost’.  Take a left on Buckhorn Lane.  Take a right onto ‘Pvt Rd’.  The parking lot will be on your right.  We will start hiking on time to beat the heat  and to keep with our schedule.  Bring a change of fresh shirt to change into after the hike before lunch.  Bring 2 liters of water and a snack.  (210)[masked]

11:30 am Lunch at Bracken Store, 18415 Bracken Dr, San Antonio, TX[masked], V: [masked]-6515.

12:30 pm meet at Natural Bridges Cavern for Combo tour. ($29.99 for adults, $17.99 for children).  Afterwards, we will go back to the hotel to take showers. [masked]

Rest of the day – River Walk.  Will decide where to have dinner when we get there.  We'll meet in front of the Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza,  San Antonio.  It closes at 7 pm, so I don't know if we'll have time to go into the Alamo; but we can if it's still open.

Sunday:

10 am brunch at Magnolia Pancake Haus, 606 Embassy Oaks, San Antonio, TX 78216, V:  (210) 496-0828.

We’re staying here:

Hampton Inn San Antonio-Northwoods
2127 Gold Canyon Drive, San Antonio, Texas, 78232, USA[masked]

Other hotel option:

BEST WESTERN Garden Inn
11939 I-H 35 N, San Antonio, TX[masked]
(Ranked #79 on Trip Advisor)

Revisions:  Revised to add more detail to schedule 6/17/14; add additional hotel information 6/6/14; change order of events 6/1/14; deleted Pinn Road Hotel suggestion 6/4/14

A lot of runners and cars here today; however, the baseball diamond parking lot is empty (believe it or not). We're in a light green forester.

This is our first outing with this group!
Molly and I have booked a room at the Hampton Inn Northwoods for Saturday night. We plan to drive Saturday morning from Uptown area to McAllister Park. If we are late leaving or otherwise delayed I will post here and plan to meet everyone at Natural Bridge Caverns. Let us know if you meet for lunch before the caverns.
We're happy to caravan if anyone else is planning to drive Saturday morning.
We want to see the Alamo, assume Sunday morning will be the best time.
    Looking forward to meeting everyone!

So, I just noticed that you put everything on one day. What are most people doing? Are most people getting a hotel for Friday & Saturday? I was hoping just to get a hotel for one night but now that things have changed that would be a very early morning 3 hour drive on Saturday and make for a looong day. I'm curious as to what other people are planning.

I was going to only stay on Saturday night but I really wanted to hike and the caves. I've never been hiking around San Antonio.

Hi Suzanne - Thanks for the clarification. Because it's getting hot, we’re not going to our normally preferred hiking venue in San Antonio - Government Canyon. Also, this hike is much, much shorter than what I normally schedule. Instead we decided to do an easy hike in a local city park that’s near the caves. The hike won’t be a particularly unique hiking experience—it’s for those of us who are hiking addicts to get our fix; however, the caves and River Walk are unique to San Antonio. In other words, if you miss the hike, you won’t miss out on a unique San Antonio experience.

However, I do schedule trips out to San Antonio on a regular basis most often during cooler weather where we can do longer hikes in Government Canyon (though I may pick another place like Hill Country State Natural Area). If you want a chance to having a San Antonio hiking experience, those would be better trips.

Hi everyone, I live in San Antonio. Go to the Hampton Inn. I would stay away from Pinn Road. It is not in a safe part in San Antonio. Cops are always there due to that being problematic on the weekends. It is also not a nice part of San Antonio. It very thuggy area.
Hampton Inn at Northwood area is in a great area and safe.

I would look at any travel site. They have hotels that are price around $100.00 a night. I recommend the airport area. It is also not far from the Northwoods area.

      Thanks! I'll do that.

I need to wait until my soccer schedule is posted to know if I can make it. Maybe I will be lucky and get a bye weekend then
