Joomla Directories - Creating and Monetizing for Success

Hello Bay Area Joomlaverse!

Joomla has been a perfect CMS for developing online directories from the beginning, and in 2013 the options are better than ever. In this Meetup we will explore the best components used for directories; Zoo by YooTheme, jReviews, SobiPro, Mosets Tree and other new components that have been created since Joomla 2.5 was unveiled.

Designing and developing a directory that can be monetized, get great search rankings and help build a network needs to be well planned from the beginning. Knowing how to choose and develop with the correct component for your needs can make or break future website expansion and greatly effect the time it will take to be successful.

In this presentation we will explore:

  • How to create a road-map for developing a successful directory
  • What features to look for and which components are best for specific purposes
  • How to extend a directory component and charge for listings or subscriptions
  • Techniques for SEO and integration with SEF Url management
  • How to market the directory and get the word out from many angles
  • What resources there are for integrating with JomSocial and other extensions

It is evident that the Internet still has a lot of room for growth in this sector, and directories have been undervalued for their ability to increase business for many years. This is especially the case when looking at the billions wasted on ad campaigns that rarely give a good return on investment.

James Foreman will be presenting and will share his expertise after 15 years of work in this area of Web Development and Internet Marketing.

Snacks/Networking: 6pm
Presentation and QnA: 6:30 - 9pm

I would love to see this again as a future meet up! This is exactly the type of information I need and I would like to discuss. I am sorry I missed it!!

James obviously throughly researched the various directories and thought of comparison points. Thanks James!

However I would have liked to have seen more about what directories are, how they work, and examples of use - what can you represent in a directory. Maybe show how a particular directory feature is affected by each of the four extensions being compared.

I was able to follow along OK because I've demoed one directory and configured another, but I wonder how well someone trying to choose a directory for the first time would have fared.

What was the CSV migration tool that Mr Foreman mentioned during this meeting for transferring data from one site to another? We want to export our restaurant reviews to a spreadsheet so we can take it into a Google Fusion Table. Perhaps there is a way we can do it manually? Does anyone know where we can access the Joomla / JReviews database? I only see the database in our CPanel.

With Sobi2, SobiPro, and jReviews under my belt, I'm looking forward to see how Zoo compares. Also, interested to get feedback on updating jReviews 2.3 to 2.4, as I have a heavily modified 2.3 version.

I 3.0 ready and Responsive a consideration in the Directory review?

    April 1, 2013

    • James F.

Hello JD... I will go over what is available for Joomla 3.0, but responsive is a big subject that will only be briefly covered. We will however have a full Meetup on responsive design soon.

Since the meetup on JReviews to sell guinea pig cages opened my eyes to directories, I've gotten to know Sobi2 and I look forward to being able to respond if a project comes along to build a directory.

We're in the middle of redesigning using Joomla 3.0 and JReviews 2.4 containing thousands of reviews. I'll see if I can make it.
