Please note that we are meeting at the Old Kmart at the corner of Bataan Memorial E and Del Rey Blvd, behind the Shell in Las Cruces. The map location is roughly where we will be camping so people can use their phones for directions in case we get separated while driving.
We will drive up the night before the hike to car camp and hike Sunday morning. The drive up is roughly 3 hours from Las Cruces. This drive will require high clearance vehicles and preferable 4 wheel drive. The last few miles of the road is not maintained by the county, only users of the road so road conditions can get a bit rough. I will do my best to get out the week before and try to improve road conditions. You will likely lose cell service while driving along Westside Rd so please stay together on the drive up as we will not able to receive texts or phone calls.
There will be an area to make a fire assuming there will not be a fire ban. Everyone is responsible for bringing their own dinner and breakfast as well as trail snacks. Once up on Joplins ridge, it is highly unlikely we will have cell service. The plan is to get up and hopefully be hiking just after sunrise (6:20) so that we can maximize the amount of sunlight we have.
There is no access to water at the campsite so please bring enough water for both days.
Off trail... along a gently sloped canyon bottom... If we are Lucky... Fall Colors!
The route includes a meandering descent into Upper Dog Canyon... then a few miles of bedrock walking mixed with mild scrambles. Portions of this hike will require some scrambling.
It might be nice to have a co-host from the Alamogordo and/or El Paso area to coordinate Car Pooling from those areas...
This tends to be a longer day... better to be in shape to enjoy it... or plan on stopping short, waiting to return with the group... it is mostly and in/out route (we have a variation for the uphill exit!) We will try to make sure the hike is finished so that we can be off Westside road before it gets dark.
