This hike is approximately 8.5 miles round-trip with 3,200' of elevation gain, and should take us between 6-8 hours to complete. Our route will be primarily off-trail for the hike up and we will probably take a fairly well established trail on the way out.
Cookes Peak is located in the Cookes Range just north of Deming; it's a 2-2.5 hour drive. (FYI: There is a Border Patrol Checkpoint). We will leave at 6a from Milagros, to give us ample sunlight for the hike.
Cookes is the high-point of Luna county located just north of Deming. It has a spire-like summit which looks very impressive from below; however it is attainable for anyone in good shape who is willing to do a bit of moderate scrambling to reach the summit.
