I have the day off for President's Day. To Celebrate, I am going to go sit in a cave in the mountains and NOT THINK ABOUT THE PRESIDENT. Everyone is welcome to join, BUT DON'T TALK ABOUT POLITICS.
You may have noticed there is an interesting rock formation off to the right (south) when you are on the trail to the waterfall in Bar Canyon (Soledad Canyon Day Use Area.) I saw it several times on group hikes, and always meant to go up there and check it out. I finally did it last August. There is a cave up there. I'll post photos.
The cave is about a mile from the parking lot. That makes for an easy hike, except for one thing. The approach to the cave is about an eighth of a mile (220 yards) at a 45% grade. More explicitly, you gain 284 feet of elevation over the course of 633 feet of horizontal travel. The path has a lot of loose rock. It's firmer than scree, but the footing is uncertain so you have to go slow. Some like this kind of challenge; others don't. Unlike most hikes, you can whine all you want, just DON'T TALK ABOUT POLITICS. If you have knee or ankle issues, you might want to not do this.
I estimate the hike itself will take an hour and a half. If we decide to go to the waterfall, or to chimney rock, or both, it'll take longer.
