UPDATE: Since there are fewer than usual camping options near the trailhead, we're going to make it a two night backpacking trip. We'll now meet at TJ Corral near Gila Cliff Dwellings at 14:00 (2 PM) on Friday and will begin hiking shortly thereafter. TJ Corral is at West Fork Trailhead #151 located at GPS[masked] [masked]. We will camp Friday at a backcounty location TBD, and Saturday night at Jordan HS.

This is a stunning hike which traverses the high country before descending into an extremely cool canyon. We’ll then travel an equally fascinating route, following the Gila River which we will ford approximately 15 times. Our campsite for the evening will be in relatively close proximity to a beautiful warm spring in which weary hiker can bathe after a challenging day of hiking as well as a long drive.

A few things you should know….

The Hardcore Extreme Series is about teaching Radical Self Reliance and Leave No Trace. (Fellow Burning Man veterans will understand this.) Therefore, all participants are responsible for getting to the trailhead on their own and bringing all the necessary equipment for an overnight backpacking trip in the wilderness.

We’ll meet at the TJ Corral near Gila Cliff Dwellings at 14:00 on Friday and will begin hiking shortly thereafter. Specifically, it’s the West Fork Trailhead #151 located at GPS[masked] [masked]. This is about a 3.5 hour drive from west El Paso, so you’ll want to get an early start or head up the night before.

Since there are numerous river crossings along this trail, it might be prudent to carry watershoes if you’d rather not hike in wet boots.

There are inherent risks associated with hiking wilderness areas. In the past I’ve seen bear, wolves, and rattlesnakes in the Gila. There is no cell service in the area we’ll be hiking. If you choose to embark on this challenge, you do so at your own risk. This message will automatically self-destruct in… ;-)

Due to the limited number of camping spots near the spring and the impact of large groups, I’m limiting this meetup to a smaller size…. And most importantly, have fun!
