Not So Urban Athletics: Catamount Aerial Adventure Park

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Is your personal anthem that century old tune, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze? If you have the faintest idea to what I'm referring then this might be the meetup for you! We're going to spend the day at the Catamount Aerial Adventure Park.

If you don't know, now you know ...

Catamount is an aerial forest challenge park consisting of over 170 platforms installed in the trees and connected by various configurations of cable, wood, rope and zip lines to form bridges. It's a safe adventure -- well, as safe as dangling from ropes 30 feet above ground can be -- that provides a variety of courses that are fun for all ability levels. There are twelve areas of varying difficulty where you are challenged to cross bridges, climb ladders, obstacles and zip lines. After you're fitted with a harness, you'll be led through a safety and park usage demonstration, given safety gloves and then unleashed to navigate your chosen treetop courses.

You probably have a boatload of questions running though your mind so check out the park's list of frequently asked questions by clicking HERE.

Since this is an inherently dangerous activity there is the requisite liability waiver to fill out beforehand, you can do that online HERE.

What does it cost and other important stuff ...

    • Admission is $51.00 for three hours of park time.
    • No experience is necessary but the minimum height is 48" and maximum weight is 265 pounds.
    • Wear well-fitting clothing that does not allow anything to hang loose or get tangled in cables and rope. Long hair and jewelry should be secured. Sneakers or hiking shoes are recommended -- no flip-flops or sandals will be allowed.
    • Refreshments are available on site but you are welcome to bring your own food and drink -- no glass bottles please.
    • Heavy rain cancels the event.
    • RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited. If you RSVP and I notice you have a number of no shows or a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
    • I will distribute my mobile phone number to the confirmed RSVPs two days before the event. Don't leave home without it.

    Directions ...

This place is about 2.5 hours Northeast of NYC. There are no mass transit options so we're going to have to carpool. When you RSVP please post if you will be driving and can give a ride to how many passengers, and from where in the comments box when you RSVP. Passengers, please contact your driver beforehand to work out the details and as a courtesy should pick up the tabs for gas/tolls.

This event is cross-posted in Evenings and Weekends in NYC. Check there when trying to set up a carpool

Isn't it more fun to do this adventure stuff in the rain? It will be like Jesse the Body Ventura, Carl Weathers, and Arnold Schwarzenegger
    in Predator!

Robin: Yeah, and how well did that turn out for Ventura & Weathers? :)

Folks, the weather forecast is too uncertain for tomorrow and I have made the executive decision to postpone this meetup -- boo on Mother Nature as I was looking forward to this! Keep an eye out for the reposting of this event.

I really want to go, but I don't want to risk getting stuck in the rain. Hopefully we can do this again when we know the weather will be better.

Mi amigos, looks like mother nature doesn't want to play nice this weekend. There is a threat of some serious stormage on Saturday that may cause me to postpone this meetup. A little shower would be no bigge but Perfect Storm type weather is a problem. I am watching the forecast closely and will make the decision on Friday if I need to postpone this event.

Hey! I'm new to the group, but I'm really excited to join you all on this adventure. I'm looking for a ride from Brooklyn, though. Or I could come in to Manhattan. Does anyone still have room in their vehicle?

Wait list people, we have a full roster for this event but if you have a car and will be driving from Brooklyn/Queens make a comment and you'll get preference. We needs people willing to drive passengers from those boroughs.

  • Kevin

People, if your plans have changed and you can't make the meetup, please be courteous and change your RSVP to NOT ATTENDING so someone from the wait list can take your place. DON'T BE A NO SHOW! No shows will be barred from RSVPing for my future events.

Would anyone be interested in pitching in together for a zipcar coming from Manhattan? Looks like a split between 5 people for a day would be roughly $26/person.

Peeps, this event is getting closer. Let's start working on those carpools in earnest please as there are a bunch of folks still needing rides. If you are planning on driving, please speak up now and let everyone know if you can give rides, to how many, and where can you pick up from. If you need a ride, be sure to also look for ride offers on the other site this meetup is listed at that I have linked to above. Thanks.
