NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon!

This is the big one! We've come a long way. I'm really proud of everyone in our running group. We've seen so much progress, it's truly amazing! 13.1 miles baby! Bring it on! :)

The race starts around Brooklyn's Botanical Garden, moves into Prospect Park, heads down to Coney Island and ends on the Coney Island boardwalk.

Afterward the plan is to party on the beach, so bring your bathing suit. Not your birthday suit (that means you Lati ;) We'll be taking lots of pictures and listening to music. As far as food, there are plenty of options along the boardwark, but feel free to bring your own food too.

For those who are not running, you can meet us at the beach starting at around 9-9:30AM... or better yet, cheer for the people running along the course! :) We'll coordinate everything as the event gets closer of course.. so stay tuned.

-Henry

TO WATCH THE RACE WITH US

After talking to Henry, I have a few more details.  We will be wearing red, and I hope to bring a red balloon to help you spot us.

Note that you can end up meeting us at any point in time - no need to be there super early if you don't want to.  Just be weary of which side of the race course you are on.  Once the race starts, you will not be able to cross the course.  We're going to try to stay on west side of race so we can use the F to get to the finish line.

MEETING BEFORE START

5am and 5:30am: Across the street from Brooklyn Public Library - corner of Underhill Ave and Eastern Parkway service road.
Map: http://goo.gl/maps/qullY

For those who want to see runners off before the start, we will meet here before the race.  We can stretch, warm up and see them off to baggage and corrals.

SPECTATING STOP 1

7am: Union Street and Plaza St West. From this spot we will be able to see runners through the Grand Army loop, and then later on in the park at around 5.5 mile.  Then we catch the F train from 15th St to Neptune Ave.

SPECTATING STOP 2

8:20 (approximate time): Neptune Ave and Ocean Parkway (using F train to Neptune Ave).We will hang at this spot to cheer the runners to push hard for their last mile.  After a while, we may move down closer to the finish line - not sure yet.

FINAL MEETING - BEACH

9:30-10am Beach - across from the Cyclone which is between W.8th and W.10th.  Bring blankets and lunch (or get lunch on boardwalk and bring to beach).

I just wanted to take a moment to say congrats to everyone! We had lots of personal bests and great first half marathon results. And a big thanks to those who just came out to support and cheer. It was great to see you guys out on the course. If you want to email me your bib numbers, I can do a 1-time post of everyone's results. This should be a full rest week. Remember keep hydrating and eat plenty of protein to help muscles recover more quickly. Also eat carbs like breads and pasta to help replenish your glycogen reserves. If possible schedule a 1-2 hour massage now that some of the initial soreness has gotten a chance to subside. Pay close attention to any issues you may have post race. They tend to not show up right away, sometimes it may take a few days or as much as a week. That is why it's very important to rest a full week after an event like this. Your bodies are in a weekend state, so any running you would normally do will take a much greater toll now.

I have bib numbers for John, Henry, Geraldine, Jeff and Robin. I'll try to use the runners tracker from NYRR. If this works well then we'll be giving you all a boost from the sidelines as you pass and shooting photos. Make sure you smile and wave when you pass ;)

    FINAL MEETUP SPOT INFO:
Hey all, at the end we will all meetup on the beach. We will meet directly across from the Cyclone which is between W.8th and W.10th. You will be able to access the beach using the footbridge on W.8th street. It will take a little while to get through baggage due to crowding, so lets plan on meeting at the beach from 9:30am - 10am. Look for the people wearing mostly RED laying out on the beach :) My cell# is[masked] Feel free to call /text me. Although I remember last year there was almost no cell reception after the race. So hopefully you will be able to get through to me if necessary. Art will be posting the details for the cheering/non runner group.

    May 17, 2013

    • Art

Lynda, to clarify: the Cyclone that Henry means is the classic wooden roller-coaster :) The other place you found is the parking lot for the Cyclone's (team name) baseball park.

      May 17, 2013

    • Lynda

Ha, so indeed there are two Cyclones! Awesome! I'll meet you all at 930 across the wooden roller coaster! Goodluck runners!

      May 17, 2013

  • Robin

Btw, I bought a red adidas shirt today but when I got home, it felt like it was going to chafe so I'll be wearing a black shirt instead :(

    May 17, 2013

  • Robin

Hey I have the slowpoke bib, #34612. Give a shout if you're in the same corral. I'm probably aiming for a 9:45/mile pace but we'll see how the adrenaline is pumping. Otherwise see you guys at the Cyclone. I'll be grabbing drinks at Peggy O'Neill's also if anyone is in the mood for a beer. Good luck racers!

    May 17, 2013

  • Henry

Everyone please check out the updated meetup details if you haven't already. Also, when you can post up your bib#s, maybe some of us will be in the same corrals. My bib is 9164.

Perhaps I am misjudging some of the comments here, but I just wanted to confirm with all...

If you want to run or walk in the race, you need to register for it at nyrr.org RSVP-ing for this meetup does not get you into the race - it only helps us organize us as a group at the race.

Given that, some of us will not be racing because of injuries or allergies ('tis the season). So I can lead that little group of race fans.

Henry, let me know if you would like to use me as a designated photographer. I could possibly set up at some pre-arranged street corner(s) to shoot (say Ditmas Ave SW corner or J Ave SW corner, then take F to finish line). That way everyone who approaches the corner can wave as they approach and I can spot them easily to shoot. Or something like that. Thoughts?

    1 · May 16, 2013

    • Henry

Awesome, thanks Art. Sure you can lead the non runner group. Do you have a good camera or do you want to borrow mine? I can set it on automatic for you if you don't know how to use it. Definitely let us know where to look for you along the course. Hopefully it will be easy for you to get to the finish afterward.

Art, that is a good suggestion. I hurt my Achilles' tendon this past Sun & will race this Sat if my foot feels 100 back to normal. There's still hope!

Btw has anyone stop by the pre race 3-day party they are hosting?
    Plan to stop by Fri

I won't be running, but hope to cheer you guys on...or help pace?

    May 16, 2013

Won't be in red - have limited options since I'm living out of my suitcase for the month but I will look for you all! And sooooo what is the final consensus on colour so I can recognize the group? It'll be my first event!

I'm guessing we're all going to wear red? That seems like the color that won the votes.

    1 · May 15, 2013

Hey all, I just added a link to the hill elevation map courtesy of John. The first hill (bet .5 and 1) you may not even notice since you're going to be nice and fresh at that point. The main hill will be the second one starting at mile 4. So just focus, and try your best to stay on pace since this is probably where you can potentially lose a lot of time. Push though that and the rest will be cake! The 3 days before the race, eat plenty of pasta and hydrate well. Also add some extra salt to your pasta dinner the night before. The salt will help you retain water so that you won't get as thirsty on race day. Also it can help prevent cramping. You are tapering this week so remember to keep the mileage low.
