A small group of us are planning a long trip down the Allegheny River, and we are floating through the section near the confluence with Oil Creek. Just upstream of the confluence, there is an ice control mechanism on the Allegheny. I am looking for information on how to navigate this.
From the limited information I could find online, it looks like it's simply a bunch of pontoons cabled together to catch floating ice and slush. It does not appear to be a real dam with separate river levels on each side. But this is from very limited information.
Note: Oil Creek also has ice control on it, and this is a real dam. It is in Oil Creek State Park. I am not concerned with this, however. It's the Allegheny that I need to navigate.
Has anyone on this list ever successfully navigated through or past this ice control structure on the Allegheny River near Oil City? Or does anyone have information on portaging around it?
Any help is very appreciated.
