• What is Conservatism and Where Does It Fit in the Spiral?
Justin's been taking a Great Courses series on the history of the development of conservativism. He'll be sharing his musings on how that relates to the Integral map and Spiral Dynamics. New understandings should be useful to all of us in this era of polarization.

  • Integral Emily Dickinson: Mystic and Shaman
"Emily Dickinson, A Medicine Woman for our Times," is an integrally informed book by Steven Herrmann, friend of our member Neil Richardson. Neil says, "Herrmann dissects Dickinson using his Jungian perspective and it is fascinating...he did the same to/with Whitman and Melville. This new book is mind blowing....she had a mystical union with “God” that was beyond the Christian concept...and literally through the fires of transformation became a Shaman." STEVEN HERRMANN, PHD, MFT Steven Herrmann is in training at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and a former adjunct professor at Sofia University in Palo Alto, California. He has a private practice in Oakland CA, where he sees children, adults, couples, and families. Herrmann is the author of four books including William Everson: The Shaman’s Call” (2009), Walt Whitman: Shamanism, Spiritual Democracy, and the World Soul (2010), Spiritual Democracy: The Wisdom of Early American Visionaries for the Journey Forward (2014), and Emily Dickinson: A Medicine Woman for our Times (2018). Herrmann has presented papers on Jungian psychology nationally and internationally and has taught courses at John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, CA, and at the C.G. Institute’s Extended Education Program in San Francisco CA. In September 2015, Herrmann presented a seminar at Sofia called “William James and C.G. Jung: The Emergence of the Field of Transpersonal Psychology,” which was published in the Integral Transpersonal Journal of Arts, Sciences and Technologies (volume 8, number eight, 2016). In July 2015, Herrmann presented at the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and International Association for Jungian Studies (IAJS) joint conference at Yale University, Connecticut, called “C. G. Jung’s Vision of Spiritual Democracy.” In the winter term, 2016, Herrmann taught a 10-week course at Sofia (ITP) called: “History of Transpersonal Psychology: James, Jung, and Vivekananda.” Link to book: https://www.amazon.com/Emily-Dickinson-Medicine-Woman-Times/dp/1771690410/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1530112321&sr=8-1&keywords=emily+dickinson+medicine+woman+herrmann

  • Integral Jordan Peterson??? Personal Development toward Meaning
Is controversial psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson a throwback to "blue" rules & roles or a prophet of a new synthesis? Love him or hate him, you must admit Peterson is a phenomenon of our age. He reaches millions with his books and lectures calling for personal development toward meaning. Recently Integral commentator Jeff Salzman podcasted on "What Jordan Peterson (and his fans and foes) can learn from Integral." https://integrallife.com/jordan-peterson-fans-foes-can-learn-integral-theory/ We'll consider Jeff's insights, then turn that around as "What Integralists can learn from Jordan Peterson." Is Peterson just "A heat shield protecting blue from green so it can emerge to orange?' as Rob Smith of Integral Life claims? Or is he something more? Teri Murphy will talk about the affect of Peterson's ideas on her own sense of purpose, then she'll lead an exploration of implications for Integral. She will be joined by Omar, head of the local Peterson Meetup. Omar is a student of the place of Jung in Peterson's work. RECOMMENDED LINKS: Fast and fun: A fan's hip hop rendition of Peterson's lecture "Clean Your Room" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KcOWSibce0&t=2333s Long & big picture: NYT Interview at Aspen Ideas conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6H2HmKDbZA Note: the symbol in the image above was created by Peterson to express ideas in his book "Maps of Meaning." It reminds me of the cover of Wilber's Integral Spirituality. While creating it, Peterson had an ecstatic state experience he describes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13J1pURD-nk

  • Be inspired by Integral Walt Whitman
    • What we'll do Take a trip into your multi quadrant self with an early Integralist - Walt Whitman. In the 2012 Journal of Integral Theory and Practice, Neil Richardson explored how America's greatest poet arrived at many of his innovative ideas that included gender and race equality, the transformation of poetry using Free Verse, and his notion that democracy was a spiritual calling. In preparation for this unique talk check out Neil's website that details his experience in understanding Whitman's words and life. www.waltwhitmanmeditation.com • What to bring • Important to know

  • D.C. Weekend Retreat 2018: "The HEART of Waking Down in Mutuality"
'bring a friend' discount; both friends get $50 off the fee of the Heart of Waking Down Weekend Retreat. Waking Down in Mutuality, as one of the four core elements or pathways of the Human Sun Model, stands at the leading-edge of spiritual teachings today. The complete Human Sun Model can be helpful to anyone of any spiritual orientation, as well as those who are not inclined towards spirituality but simply want to live a Heart-full life. Such work becomes a next advanced stage of spiritual practice, one that may “wind up integrating us both visibly and openly” with both the small circles of spirituality and the world in general. Are you just finding out about or new to the Waking Down® work? Attending the Weekend Retreat (or only the Intro Evening) could be ideal for you if: * You feel hungry in your heart and soul – for what, you may not even know, * You’ve tried different approaches to spiritual growth and awakening, and you want a path that’s more compatible with your everyday human life, * Your life is working well but you sense something essential is still missing, * You’ve sought to find truth or God or peace or love, with all your heart, and you’re starting to despair – or maybe you have been for a while, or, * You’ve aspired and despaired so much that you’ve kind of given up hope You may have any kind of career, intimate life, or family, or none. You may be male or female, young or old, or in between. You may have a whole spiritual history or little or none. You may be practicing spiritual or personal disciplines right now, even enjoying and benefiting from them, and yet still feel weighed down by yearning and dissatisfaction. Whatever is prompting you to explore this work, The HEART of Waking Down in Mutuality Weekend Retreat will give you a dynamic understanding of what the work entails. You’ll get to both learn about and experience this path of process of awakening and ongoing growth in the “sanctuary of mutuality” that all those participating co-create together. We’re confident the retreat will activate your living experience of Waking Down in ways you can’t possibly know in advance. In it's most basic version, this process is Life-Enhancing; in it's most advanced, a Life-Transforming (and all encompassing) new life, a second birth. The intent of The Human Sun Model is to “translate advanced teachings into the world on the world’s own terms.” This weekend retreat will be presented by Saniel Bonder, Linda Groves-Bonder their assisting friends.
