Navigation (required for Climbing, Scrambling and Winter Travel)

Navigation course requires one classroom training and one field trip component. A classroom session will be held at Silverdale Fire Station on Thur. May 2, from 6-9:30 p.m. A field trip evaluation will be held on Sat. May 04 at Gold Mountain. Participants who complete the course will meet the required Navigation certification that is required in other Mountaineers courses including: Basic Climbing, Scrambling, Snow and Rock Alpine Mountaineering and Winter Travel. More information on the field trip component will be provided after signing up. Only participants who have completed the classroom study are eligible to participate in the field trip component. Students are expected to read “Wilderness Navigation” by Bob Burns and Mike Burns, prior to the classroom session and will be expected to discuss and utilize topics covered in the book. The book is available through Mountaineers books. The classroom session will be utilizing the USGS 7.5 minute map, Mt. Deception. Kitsap Mountaineers will offer laminated maps for use during the classroom session (not to be given away) or the participants are welcome to bring their own maps. These can be purchased at any REI store or through the website: USGS store (product number:[masked] for the Mt Deception map). Participants are required to bring a compass which has adjustable declination. See mountaineers website for more information. Registration is limited to 12 participants. Fee is $50 –for Mountaineers members ($100 for non-members). This covers one classroom component and one field trip component within the same calendar year.
