Thanksgiving Dinner - Turkey, Tofurkey, Kimchi, & Celebration

  • Nov 20, 2010 · 6:00 PM
  • FM

Many members haven't had a Thanksgiving dinner, and here's a chance to get together for one of the oldest of American holidays.

Celebration Time!! tongue laughing cool

We will meet at FM Karaoke, and we will bring in our own eats: turkey, tofu, chicken, side dishes, etc.

So we can be social and get to know each other, we will not have Karaoke the entire time. We have the room for 3 hours for $90 (total cost) due to the organizer working out a deal (see below). Additional hours are $60 per hour or maybe a little less.

what you need to do:

  • Bring Something: write a comment of what you will bring. If you bring something, it is $7 to cover the room costs & shared materials (cups, plates, some main & side dishes, etc.). If you don't bring something, it is $200 at the door. Or something like that. Bring something, bake something, make something, or get a friend to help you find something! . You can even order a dish from the FM Karaoke menu (pdf) as your contribution. The original Thanksgiving was about sharting something to celebrate with a group.
  • Visit their Facebook page and if you like, the "like" it.
  • Volunteers to help set up are welcome to come at 5:30pm. (Please write in comments if you are coming early so we have an idea of how many).
  • Singers should practice their sippal bun - favorite song to sing.

We estimate 25-35 people at this point. (Worried the room is not large enough? It can fit over 30, and they have more rooms available.)

The location is across the street from Shilla Bakery (Rockville)... which has stuff you can bring (hint hint)... and also there is a Safeway across the street, and an asian market (which seems to focus on Thai/Vietnamese/Southeast asian food).

More details will be added - if you want to help organize this event, or cook, or can help set up starting around 5:30pm, please add it to your RSVP.

Drinks: the location has a full menu of drinks, including a lot of Korean options (soju, etc.)

Location: FM Karaoke in Rockville, Maryland.

Metro: Rockville, MD - too far to walk, so we will arrange to pick up people who need rides. It's only 5 minutes to drive, so we can make multiple trips (we've done this before) starting around 5:30pm. You will want to walk to the east side exit (to the right after coming down from the tracks) and go to the kiss-n-ride pickup area. If you want to volunteer to pick people up from the metro, please post a comment.

The karaoke machine was too loud

    November 21, 2010

  • Paul

We can't bring in alcoholic drinks. We can bring in other non-alcoholic drinks, or buy them there.

    November 20, 2010

  • Paul

I have fresh cooked turkey, plus stuffing, mashed potatoes, and smoked ham.

I will try to connect people with rides... looks like a few people in VA need rides.

    November 20, 2010

  • Paul

Lena - I wish I could swing by and pick up but I'm going to probably run out of time. Carol, etc. - I'm going to pick up at the Rockville Metro at 5pm. It will be getting dark then, so I will try to have a way to find me (my "meetup flashlight" idea) at the Kiss-and-ride. Go to the right when you come down the stairs from the upper platform.

If you're arriving later & need metro pickup, it's close by, and call someone in the group who is there to let us know.

Rockville metro - for drivers & people being picked up: It's a road loop where you can wait to pick up people. Drivers enter from S. Stonestreet Ave. Metro station is back to the left of the bus in this view... looks like this:

    November 20, 2010

  • Carol

I need to be picked up also!!!!!

    November 20, 2010

  • Sherly

Will need a pickup please! Thanks yo! And I am bringing guests and probably a fruit salad.

    November 20, 2010

  • Kia Y.

I'm not sure, I think we would have had to pre-order a turkey from most places by yesterday to get it tomorrow. I wish I had time to cook a turkey but I don't think so. If you don't find one, let me know and I'll just bring the chicken.

    November 19, 2010

  • Paul

Kia - if you know a place to get an already-cooked turkey, that was my plan. If you want to buy one & cook it, we can help with some/all costs.

    November 19, 2010

  • Kia Y.

Is anyone bringing a turkey? Since it's celebrating Thanksgiving and all. If not, since it's too late for me to cook/acquire one in time, I can bring several roast chickens. It's not the same but at least we'll be carving something.

    November 19, 2010

  • Paul

No one has asked, but yes, you can contribute $ at the event. And if you can't bring something you may have to sing. Oh, wait... hmmm..

    November 19, 2010

  • Carol

would someone like to get me from rockville metro please?

  • Jin

ill bring pumpkin pie....love the stuff

    November 19, 2010

  • Kia Y.

Oh, and I'll bring a main dish of some sort, not sure what exactly.

    November 19, 2010

  • Kia Y.

I am waiting to hear if my friend is coming with me or not. If she doesn't, I can come early to help set up. Also, I'm coming from Arlington, VA so if there are any VA people who'd like a ride, I can take 3 (4 if my friend doesn't come) with me and help with Metro pickups.

    November 19, 2010

  • Carol

wow cool i have seen this karaoke place but never actually tried it yet

    November 18, 2010

  • lindel

I vote for reserving a place now for December 18th also so people can have a week
Or two to prepare a dish they would like to bring, that's part of the fun of potluck.

    November 18, 2010

  • Paul

I like Green Acres (it's the place to be, I've heard somewhere). We would get the metro pickups organized. They are closed now so have to check tomorrow.

Whereever we do this, we'll probably need people to volunteer to pick up at a metro station.

And this afternoon I received a list of 50+ places in the area (Fairfax, mostly) for this type of event. They are restaurants, halls/community centers, and off-beat places like atriums and gardens. (ideas for a Dec 18th Holiday dinner)

    November 18, 2010

  • Sherly

I like the Green Acres idea, only problem is it's not close to Vienna metro. Wmata tells me it'll be another 45 minutes from Vienna to the senior center. But so far, that seems the best idea. Mr. Smith's responded and they do have room Saturday to accomodate 30 people, but they would want to know what we'd be ordering, off the menu or special menu that we request. Anyway, there'd be a fee. I like the senior center idea.

    November 18, 2010

  • Brian K.

Paul -- we are definitely doing Saturday night though, right?

    November 18, 2010

  • 2N

Also, the Green Acres Senior Center room is available this Saturday and that goes for $55/hr. Their brochure: http://www.fairfaxva.gov/parksrec/download/GreenAcresBrochure.pdf

    November 18, 2010

  • 2N

Another suggestion. Green Acres facility in Fairfax. Their cafeteria is available this Saturday afternoon. It can hold max 100 persons. Rents $75/hr, Access to microwave and sink. Free parking, closest metro is Vienna. Check them out at https://activenet11.active.com/fairfaxcityrecdept/servlet/registrationMain.sdi?source=reserveOptions.sdi&redir=1

I'm still calling & looking. Thanks to the group, we have a lot of options. My goals are to keep it low-cost (or free/pot luck), at the same time, near a metro, with space for 50 people. Not all goals may be met... my other goal is to decide by tomorrow morning.

    November 18, 2010

  • Carol

Paul have u picked a location yet???

    November 18, 2010

  • Sherly

A friend recommended Mr. Smith's restaurant in Georgetown...it's not as personal as having a get together at someone's place or a community center and bringing stuff, but I've heard it's good. I emailed them to see if they'd be able to host a large group of people on Saturday, hopefully they'll get back to me. http://mrsmiths.com/v1/index

I tried calling community centers in Fairfax county and they require booking 6-8 weeks in advance. McLean one requires you submit inquiry through some e-form of theirs. I won't do that.

You totally read my mind 2N! I was about to post that idea then I read yours. I think your best bet would be to message all the responders if they have a party room to rent at their apt. Most people may not be reading the forums.

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with your family. It's also a time to be thankful and care for the needy. Why not go to a shelter for food in DC or nearby? They provide the venue and utilities. You provide food and member support. Lindel, thanks for your suggesting my place, but I don't think this group is needy enough to be on my list LOL.

    November 16, 2010

  • Paul

Thanks for the recent ideas.. I will make more calls tomorrow.

    November 15, 2010

  • 2N

If you're not set on doing it indoors and you still can't find a location, how about doing it outdoors at a park? Saturday's forecast is sunny at high 50s to low 60s. Free, ample space and its the way the Pilgrims & Indians did it in the ol days.

  • Dan H

If we can't find a place, why don't we have it at Hibachi Buffet & Sushi in Manassas, VA (only 7 miles south of Centreville). For only $11.95 per person, we can have a private room with turkey and their regular menu such as sushi. raw bar, Korean BBQ short ribs, Pork ribs, Prime ribs and seafood. Call[masked] for info.

    November 13, 2010

  • Sean

Here are more listings below, but the McLean one looks real good. We should consider that place for possible future parties, movie-showings, and etc.

  • Sean

Although I will not be attending, I can still help you guys find a place.
@Paul....take a look at the McLean Community center below. The hours are really good (Fri-Sat 9-Midnight), can watch movies there, and the price should be something you guys can handle. Better call them right away.

Kia - thanks for the ideas. I'm going to look at some options tomorrow. One apartment was $500 for their room... but it apparently was a really nice place.

Another idea, what about at a library? I know one of my other meetup groups meets about once every other month at Reston library and more often than not there is food. I believe it is free as well. The only caveats would be the time restriction and, I believe, no alcohol...although don't quote me on that.

    November 12, 2010

  • Kia Y.

Does anyone live in an apartment or in a community with a party room? Or know anyone who does? Most of the time fees for those rooms are real affordable and sometimes even refundable.

    November 12, 2010

  • lindel

Could rent a meeting/conference room at a hotel near metro, or the Clarendon ballroom, but that will be more expensive.

We could reschedule to November 26th the Friday after thanksgiving and use the place in Arlington

    November 12, 2010

  • Paul

    Keep looking...!

I've called Arlington county and there are many openings, but not at the time this event is set up for (6pm). They close their buildings at 5pm on Saturdays, which means 4:30pm because they close the rooms 30 minutes early.

So if we use the Arlington rooms for a Saturday event, it will have to be Saturday afternoon (2pm-4:30pm).

But they have available rooms for the night before - Fri Nov. 19 - and are open until 9pm (which means use of the room until 8:30pm).

i can check with korean churches in the area...
