• @Shilla: Free Weekly Korean Language Session 스터디 모임 - Lesson Exchange DC MD VA
KOREAN LANGUAGE SESSION 스터디 모임! & Korean/American Cultural Exchange Studying a language? Need lessons? The more time you spend, the more your brain makes important connections... learning! Spend your time to hear and speak the Korean language, to help yourself learn. Now in our 4th year of weekly events! Whatever your level, join us as we explore the Korean language and culture. This is a good event for people to attend for their first meetup! Hundreds and hundreds of people have attended since we started the event in 2012... our most popular event series. We include a chance to exchange with others, and depending on how each event flows, provide lesson-type information and learning. We also sometimes have events at the Tous Les Jours bakery in Annandale (check our calendar). Update for the week: Each week we have a "word of the week", which can be more than one word, too. Update for late 2017: Our group events have the following rules for attendees (http://www.meetup.com/koreans/pages/Event_Attendance_Rules_and_Guidelines/), along with some cultural guidelines, so that we can all enjoy our times together. Please keep in mind the following two important items, as well as the other linked information: • We do not tolerate harassment of members, either in-person or online, in any form. • Do not pressure anyone for their phone number or contact information. Read the entire page before attending, to be familiar with the rules: http://www.meetup.com/koreans/pages/Event_Attendance_Rules_and_Guidelines/ (End of late 2017 update) Can't read the headline for this event? The Korean hangul characters "스터디 모임" we learned in an earlier meetup means "study moim" or study meeting/gathering. 도와주시겠어요? Native Korean language speakers welcome to join us as well, to help us learn the difficult parts of Korean, and to find language exchange partners & meet new friends. Post if you need a metro station or other pickup. The location has been nice to allow us to meet there, because it helps to give us a place to gather at no cost. If you attend you do not have to buy anything, but it helps if you do! They have a nice selection of items, and it is a small business with people who live in our area. Also, health studies show we are happier when we help others. Buying for another person can improve your happiness, and being happy has been shown to help with things like learning languages. The event usually lasts for about 2 hours, and many people join for a dinner after the event at a local restaurant (usually Korean food). The dinner location isn't usually decided until after the event starts, and we sometimes get special discounts or other benefits. • Networking Happy Hour!
Join us every three weeks for food, fun, and networking! This event has been going strong for over four years with well over 500 total attendees. We sometimes donate to charities, watch sports, discuss culture or current events, or just have a great time. Whatever your interest may be, you will enjoy this meetup time and time again! Our happy hour will most often be centered on Korean Fried Chicken and Networking, but we may occasionally find ourselves in another sort of Korean or other bar. There is no set agenda other than to have a good time. You can come late, leave early, or stay the whole time, it's all up to you! As much as possible we will have separate checks although you are always free to go in on a dish together with someone or purchase something to share with the group. I'll be arriving by 6:30 PM, but feel free to arrive as early or late as you please and stay as long as you like. Free parking is available behind the restaurant in the building garage. It is also a short bus ride from the Rosslyn Metro (4A) or the Courthouse Metro (4B). Both buses are towards Seven Corners. Better yet, for those coming from DC, take the 16Y from McPherson, Farragut, or Foggy Bottom. It's nearly non-stop to Bonchon! If you have a suggestion for a location or are interested in co-hosting an event with me, please let me (Jason) know. QUESTIONS? Feel free to message Jason West with any questions or post them in the comments section below. Have a suggestion for our next happy hour location? Let us know! This event is cosponsored by the North Korea Network meetup (http://on.nkn.us/1Bb7tiU), a professional meetup for learning about North Korean and East Asian security, rights, culture, and other issues.

  • Art Exhibition Opening: Damageable Perfection featuring Euyoung Hong
Join us for the opening of Damageable Perfection, a special solo exhibition of intricate installation works by 2018 Artist of the Year Euyoung Hong that examines the intersection of urban spaces and politics in modern society. SEPARATE RSVP REQUIRED: https://goo.gl/forms/cKaj4hW3OG8uv5vh1 Euyoung Hong’s work explores the complex social relationships that emerge between urban spaces, objects, and politics. She is particularly interested in how familiar concepts are transformed by capitalist urbanization, such as changing ideas of urban land use, the politics of space, and social vs. spatial production and transformation. By looking at urbanization in the Republic of Korea, Hong focuses on how our understanding of everyday objects and ideas has evolved over time in terms of the politics of space. This transformation is especially evident in the essential ways that society participates in, conceives, and constructs a capitalist urban system. The Artist of the Year recognition, presented to a single artist whose work is featured at the Korean Cultural Center, spotlights outstanding creators of the highest class. Selected from among those who applied to the center’s Open Call for Artists, this notable artist is honored with a special solo exhibition. The Open Call program celebrates its third anniversary in 2018 and aims to introduce unique Korean and Korea-inspired artists to mainstream art in the United States. Admission to the opening reception and talk by the artist on Friday, November 9 at 6:00 p.m. is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
