Lieutenant Colonel Paul Edwards - Expedition Leader
‘Scott’s Legacy – The story of a contemporary Antarctic expedition conducted 100 years after Scott’s fateful journey’.
In 2012 a team of 24 British Servicemen and Women deployed to the Antarctic Peninsula in the 100th Anniversary of Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. Inspired by his legacy to science and exploration their aim was to conduct an expedition, not in his footsteps, but in his spirit. 100 years after Scott’s death the team spent two months exploring part of the Antarctic Peninsula and collecting scientific data, very much in the manner of Scott’s last expedition. The team suffered numerous setbacks and encountered many difficulties during the expedition, before successfully returning to the UK having made the first ascent of over twenty five peaks on the Antarctic Peninsula and having collected scientific data relating to climate change, human physiology and psychology. Most of all, however, they had an understanding of the level of commitment, courage and determination Scott and his men must have required a century earlier. This lecture will tell their story.
