• March Roundtable Meetup Downtown Los Angeles
Greetings, members of LA Devops. Engineers in operations are in a small niche, so even in a healthy-sized engineering team we don't always get to interact with peers. Conferences and meetups are where we can talk to each other about which methods and technologies are working, as well as which ones are largely broken assemblages of blog posts and Hacker News comments. To that end, we're having one of our roundtable discussions on the last Monday of March. It helps all of us in the field to know each other, and this is how we do it. The venue, food, and drink are all being provided by AXS.com. AXS.com asks that attendees RSVP so that they can have a list for building security.

  • UUASC Field Trip: December Meetup "System Troubleshooting"
LA Devops runs up against the holidays during November and December, so we didn't set up any Meetups to finish 2016. UUASC is early enough in December that they're having their last meeting of the year tonight, at Verizon (was Edgecast). Their meeting tonight is on System Troubleshooting, which is in our wheelhouse. If you're looking to get one last users' group meeting in this year, UUASC might be the one. I'm posting the event here as maxing out at one person. If you're interested in joining UUASC tonight, RSVP on their Meetup page. https://www.meetup.com/UUASC26/events/235834427/

  • September Formal Presentations in Inglewood
Ops, Devs, everyone: Los Angeles Devops is meeting on September 26 to hear two presentations. Notes on parking: Spaces in the office park are reserved, but there should be ample street parking, which is free after 6PM. There is also a Home Depot nearby. Noah Zoschke: Minimum Viable Infrastructure (https://nzoschke.github.io/mvi/) Says Noah: "I'm building Convox, an open-source platform that expertly configures AWS to run and manage any application. In doing this I have discovered a minimal set of 12 cloud infrastructure services that form an architecture that supports any application. Here I'll introduce the 12 service types that support our secure computing, application workload, and operational needs. I'll show how these services are used together to manage a secure computing cluster that can build Docker images for an app, roll out new images to production with zero downtime, and scale to handle any load. Finally we'll look at the cloud computing landscape to see how all the cloud providers and software projects compare with offering these 12 service types." Jeremy Pryzgode: Using the ELK Stack to Audit and Report on AWS Resources In the dynamic world of the cloud and AWS one must collect metadata from resources that are ephemeral in nature. Learn how Stratalux collects and reports on AWS resources using Elastic’s ELK Stack and SQS. In this talk I will discuss how Stratalux collects AWS cloudtrail, cloudwatch and AWS Config data using AWS’s SQS service into an ELK Stack for auditing and troubleshooting purposes. Learn how Stratalux leverages CloudFormation Templates to configure AWS for this purpose and then report on this information using the ELK Stack.

  • February Presentations in Pasadena
Ops, devs, and everyone else: We're holding our February meetup in Pasadena. I've recently had some good hallway-track discussions at conferences about the relevance of testing in infrastructure and operations, so I've booked two speakers to talk about it. John Dewey: Molecule John Dewey is one of the developers behind Molecule. Molecule is designed to aid in the development and testing of Ansible (https://docs.ansible.com) roles including support for multiple instances, operating system distributions, virtualization providers and test frameworks. Arthur Freyman: "Unit Testing and Devops" Unit tests for fun (not really) and profit. Why they are important for "infrastructure as code" and operational scripts/utilities and how to do them.

  • #CoffeeOps: Let's Catch Up
As we close out the year, we traditionally don't have normal meetups because of the holidays. Last year we did #coffeeops the last two months of the year and it worked great. So, let's get together, grab a cup of coffee and catch up and talk about what the next year holds.
