Street Photography | Assignment: 10 Miles from Home

Presenter: Brian Bernas

Join us as Brian B. delves into the world of Street Photography!

Street photography is a genre of photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places and does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. 'Street' simply refers to a place where human activity can be seen, a place to observe and capture social interaction. The subject can even be absent of any people and can be that of object or environment where an object projects a human character or an environment is decidedly human.

Assignment: 10 Miles From Home

Sometimes the best photo subjects are right under our nose, and sometimes new worlds open up in a simple 10 minute car ride.  So break out your maps, calculate a spot that's exactly ten miles from your home, and find a photo-worthy subject!

(NEW) A few reminders about some of the basic rules of the assignment:

  • Members may submit 2 photos.
  • Photos should be emailed to us the Wednesday prior to the Thursday meeting.

If you have any additional questions about submitting photos or the monthly assignment in general, consult the Assignment FAQ or the Upload Instructions by clicking on the links below:

Remember to get your shots to us (as jpg's, 3mb or less, at least 1600 pixels on the long edge) at [masked].

Lack of perceived skills were one of the reasons why some might not be comfortable taking street shots. As time moves on the image of today becomes far more interesting to the viewers who were not around when it was shot. An image of an interesting human subject with something common in the background in today's terms might be deemed invaluable in the future when it is found to be the only surviving image of that object in future years. The skill of the photographer is secondary to the luck of catching something no one else had. Your least interesting image shot today could be the most desirable image in the future.
