Antarctica - Show and Tell

  • As many of you know, I spent most of November on a ship at South Georgia Island and Antarctica. The purpose for me was single-minded—to make photographs.

After sailing 3.5 days east out of Argentina, we arrived at South Georgia Island into the path of a small hurricane providing 82 knot winds (95 miles per hour, for those who need to know.) After a few days of photographing the fjords of South Georgia, we steamed on to South Orkney Islands to deliver a bottle of wine to scientists living there.

From there, we traveled to the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula stopping at many landing sites to photograph ice, snow, penguins, and sea lions. Our southing extended to 65° south where we met sea ice that became too dangerous to trespass. The Antarctic Circle is found at 68.33° south. Antarctica truly is an alien landscape. I am proud I went, sea sickness and all, but I have no desire to return.

OMG! I love that photo of the sea lion. He totally makes me smile. Love it. I hope I can attend this one. New to the group but looking forward to meeting others who share a love for photography.
