Language Exchange Sunday

  • Apr 15, 2012 · 3:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We meet on Sundays in midtown Manhattan. Please meet us at the tables inside the glass atrium of the venue at the NORTH SIDE. You will see many people grouped together sitting down with international flags on the tables or at the start standing in groups.

The meetup time is 3:45 pm - 6:00 pm, although people can stay longer if they wish.

Food & drinks are available at the Starbucks by the south side of the atrium or you can bring your own.

IMPORTANT
1. When you RSVP, please write what you SPEAK and what you would like to LEARN in the comments section. This way members know if their language will be available!

2. Please CHECK-IN at the NAME TAG TABLE and fill one out, this lets all know you are part of our group, facilitates you going up to anyone and saying hello and using their name thus creating a friendlier atmosphere!

3. We are asking all members to spend at least 1/4 of their time HELPING out in their native language! That way we all help each other, you meet people interested in your culture and you make more friends! So for example if your working on your Spanish but from USA, you spend an hour and a half learning at the Spanish table, then give the ESL table half an hour and help out English learners!

4. Please CLEAN UP after yourselves (coffee cups, papers, etc) and organize chairs and tables when you leave.

5. DONATION of $1 will be accepted to cover the group costs

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

If you guys are interested in a smaller meetup for Spanish and english, please email me. I'm thinking this Thursday at 6 pm in central park. It may rain at that time, so I'll have to think of an alternate location.

It would have to have chairs, benches and ideally some tables... Maybe take over a playground, although there are some laws about taxpayers not being allowed te go into a playground w/o a child...

Im thinking we could meet in the corner of central park closest to the 59th st-Columbus circle stop. Anyone have any ideas for an easy to find spot?

Cathy, I can do lunchtime and so can Jose. I work in rockefeller center.

How about thurs the 26th at 6:00 pm for a tentative time? It would give us a couple of hours before sundown.

Hey everyone: in the next few days I'm just going to post a date and meeting place for a Spanish/English group. I'll see what kind of response I get and we"ll go from there. I"ll post a date at least two weeks ahead if time so we can work out the details. Also, I have an irregular schedule with a lot of days off here and there, so if anyone wants to do lunchtime or afternoon meetings, that's doable for me. for other language speakers wanting to learn english, if you do your own group and want a

Hi all, I just read your comments and it sounds really interesting to me. I am a native Spanish speaker from South America so if there is a specific English/Spanish conversation group that combines language practice with bilingual entertainment I would like to join it for sure. It has been kind of complicated for me to find native English speakers for language exchange. Thanks for your initiative Kathy.

Anyone want to do a lunch in midtown? I'm in rock centre and would love to practice!

I would also prefer something outdoors. My feeling is that if there are no native Spanish speakers interested for whatever day is chosen, then a Spanish movie thing would be more useful for learning. So I'm wondering if I should just pick a date and see what kind of interest we get? If there's not a good combination of Spanish/ english speakers signing up, we can revamp. My vote is for a Thursday late afternoon in the next couple of weeks.

I can offer my home if people bring tapas but I would love to do a picnic (people also bring food to share) in Central Park - weather permitting of course! Are there any Spanish or South American natives?

It looks to me that , rather than have separate small groups, that they be combined into a medium sized group. Meeting in a bar has the disadvantage that most bars these days are very noisy. Maybe, someone could suggest a bar, or restaurant, that could accommodate a crowd AND be relatively quiet...

So people interested in the smaller Spanish/English groups--maybe we should take votes on best days of the week?

    April 17, 2012

  • Rudy

Anyway, stay tuned, it will probably be at a restaurant or bar unless someone has an apartment that can hold 25-30 people? Email me with ideas! Might even do it at my place!

    April 17, 2012

  • Rudy

Cathy, Ivan and Natalie, very good you are all thinking along these lines! Gerson, Frank and I are doing the same! We are about to launch our weeknight specific language and cultural events. We were just waiting for a certain amount of members, interest and good weather! Gerson and I are currently working on the first onefor next week, SPANISH, lol!

As of now, my place doesn't have enough space to entertain a small crowd. When I move Next month hopefully I can start thinking about hosting a movie night. Until then all I can do is head up a get together in the park or the like.

    April 16, 2012

  • Natalie

I would. This could be accompanied by tapas in someone's home. All can contribute food or money... I am pretty fluent in Spanish and love the culture and opportunities to speak it more. For those who are interested, I also teach French both privately and at the FIAF.

So a few people sound interested in a smaller group. I would love to get one organized in the upcoming weeks. though since my work schedule is random, I have to wait and see what days I'm free. Second idea: everyone tells me that watching movies/tv with subtitles is helpful. Would anyone be up for a Spanish/English movie night?

To me, was kind of hard to find native English speakers at the assigned table but somehow I fond them around the other tables. therefore the meeting was enormously acceptable to me.
    Thanks.

PLEASE do not show up if you are still on the WAITING LIST before the event. I am getting emails about this. Sorry, there is only seating for 125 at this venue and we want all to be able to sit, engage in practice and be comfortable.

PLEASE be considerate and adjust RSVP if you will NOT BE THERE the first hour! We have 26 people on the waiting list who really want to come, so if your not sure, please change your status to not attending.

    April 10, 2012

  • Allan...

@Cathy, I don't remember if anyone's suggested that before, but your idea is a good one. There's already another group that meets at other times that piggybacks on this group on Sundays, so you might want to organize a separate Spanish meetup (sub)group of your own and do the same thing...

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in splitting up into smaller conversation groups every now and then (while continuing the popular sunday afternoons) E.g. Native spanish speakers and native english speakers would get together one evening in central park. Maybe this has been suggested before....
