Last-Minute Meetup Alert: Play 'n' Hike at Sewickley Heights Borough Park

From: Kerry K.
Sent on: Friday, April 10, 2009 2:25 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for The Pittsburgh Large/Giant Breed Dog Meetup Group!

What: Play 'n' Hike at Sewickley Heights Borough Park

When: April 11,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: Come on out and enjoy some cool spring weather and a morning of off-leash play and hiking!

We will meet in the upper parking lot of Sewickley Heights Borough Park, walk a short distance to the meadow for off-leash dog play and socializing. If you and your dogs want some exercise, we can hike on the trails of the park. The trails are not paved, and the hiking difficulty is easy to medium, with a couple possible difficult spots. If you're not into hiking, you can stay in the meadow area and enjoy more off-leash time.

Please note: This park is not completely fenced. The existing fence is a split-rail, and it will not contain your dog beyond offering visual boundaries. Your dog must be under voice control at all times, or you must leash your dog. New leash laws in the park require you to keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and within 100 feet of the parking area. Additionally, you must carry a leash with you at all times within the park, even when your dog is on the off-leash area trails. Hefty fines will result from not heeding these laws. Read about the new leash laws.

Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes you don't mind getting muddy (since we just endured some thunderstorms!). There is a creek along the trails at one point, and dogs are welcome to romp in the water. You will occasionally see horses on the trail, but they never bother the dogs and vice versa.

The park provides water for the dogs, and you can also hose them off if they get muddy (which they will if you visit the creek!). Bring towels to dry off your dog. Additionally, we'll have a couple gallons of water in the off-leash meadow area for our group's dogs.

What to bring:

No more than 3 dogs per handler
Leash (Even if your dog is under voice control, dogs must be leashed in parking area)
Clean-up bags for your dog's poop -- bags are not provided in the large off-leash area of the park, so make sure to bring something to put their waste in
Towels for drying your dog

Directions to Sewickley Heights Borough Park:
Take I-79 to Mt. Nebo exit. Take Mt. Nebo Road west towards Sewickley. This will become Blackburn Road. Follow Blackburn Road through the countryside until you come to a stop sign. Make right at stop sign onto Fern Hollow Road. You will pass Boro Building on your right and the park entrance is immediately after that on right. Follow the drive all the way to the parking lot at end. Dog meadow area is a short walk from the parking lot.
