Self-regulation or self-control is one of the secrets to happiness and flourishing.
However, the ability to delay short term gratification for long term gain is no easy task. Whether it be going to bed at a certain hour, resisting the second helping of dessert, turning off your self-critical thoughts, creating space in your calendar for you-time, resisting the urge to tell someone off when they anger you, spending less time on facebook, watching less tv, netflix, youtube or hulu, you use your self-regulation muscle everyday all day long.
Even just reading this e-mail without switching over to another e-mail requires self-regulation.
Ever wonder why it's easy to resist temptation in one area of your life but it's so hard to motivate yourself in others? Do you find yourself often telling yourself you "should" do something but have a hard time "just doing it?"
One of the many areas of well researched tools for increasing flourishing is the process of self-regulation. This Saturday I'm facilitating a live interactive and edu-taining (educational + entertaining) workshop on the science of increasing self-regulation and happiness.
Itinerary for Saturday:
-What is self-regulation? How does it work? What does it do?
-Self regulation and the science of how your brain works.
-Research on depleting and repleting self-regulation.
-How to stop knee jerk reactions and habitual patterns.
-Simple tools for increasing your self-discipline.
All this in a fun, playful and energetic environment where you'll work with new friends, play games, watch video clips and even improve your posture.
You should participate in this workshop if:
• you have a hard time doing what you say you're going to do (particularly when it comes to things for yourself not others)
• you find yourself addicted to your electronic devices... i.e. Checking Facebook or email multiple times a day.
• you find yourself repeating habitual behaviors and often give in to temptations
• you value your happiness and are always looking for tools for improving your life
Click here for a recent NY Times article on Dr. Roy Baumeister's cutting edge research on self-regulation and his most recent book publication on the topic. This article provides a good foundation for the theory of self-regulation, and on Saturday you'll get to experience and apply the science to your own life.
Showing up in the world the way you want to is essential for happiness and flourishing. Self-regulation isn't a skill we're taught in school; learn how to master your self, your mind, and your temptations.
Please RSVP as soon as possible to help us ensure we have enough space and materials for everyone. I hope to see you this Saturday for a fun and interactive evening.
Love and Light,
